UK Trial of Moslem Bombers - survival by luck!

""Bomb plot Muslims were under police surveillance!

    ""Daily Telegraph 16/01/2007

    On Trial:
    =====
Manfo Asiedu, Muktar Said Ibrahim and Ramzi Mohammed
Yassin Omar, Hussain Osman and Adel Yahya

Muslim extremists accused of launching failed suicide bomb attacks on London in July 2005 had been under police surveillance months earlier, a court was told yesterday.

If the alleged plot had succeeded it would have caused carnage on the capital's transport system for the second time in a fortnight, the court was told.....

The co-ordinated attempt at suicide bomb attacks on three Underground trains and a bus, two weeks after the July 7 attacks that claimed 52 lives, failed only because the home-made bomb mixture was not strong enough, it was claimed.

They were not copycat attacks, the jury at Woolwich Crown Court was told, because they had been planned before the first set of bombings brought terror to London's commuters and tourists.

"The ultimate objective was to carry out a number of murderous suicide bombings," Nigel Sweeney, QC, prosecuting, told the jury at the high-security Woolwich Crown Court.

One man, Ramzi Mohammed, 25, had turned so that the rucksack on his back was pointing towards a mother with her child in a pushchair as he attempted to detonate the bomb in a tunnel on the Northern Line causing “panic, fear and confusion.”

The detonators went off but the hydrogen peroxide and chapatti flour mixture, surrounded by nuts and bolts to cause maximum damage and carnage, did not ignite, Mr Sweeney said.

The men made their escape, one of them later adopting a woman’s burkha, but they were arrested by police in a series of raids over the next two weeks.

Mr Sweeney told the jury that five of the accused were watched and photographed by police as they packed up after a Bank Holiday weekend spent camping at a farm in Langdale in the Lake District in May 2004. "Police officers deployed on surveillance duty on the Monday saw a group of 20 or more, including one or two youngsters.

"They watched as they packed up their tents and lined up in Islamic prayer. At times they were addressed by someone who appeared to be their leader.

"Officers took a number of photographs."

The jury was shown pictures of Ibrahim, carrying a large rucksack, along with Ramzi Mohammed, 25, wearing a T-shirt and camouflage trousers, Yassin Omar, 26, wearing a white hooded top, and Adel Yahya, wearing a blue hooded top. The men, born in Africa and living in London, are charged, with Manfo Asiedu, 33, with conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions. They deny the charges.

The court heard that Osman, arrested after fleeing to Brighton then Paris and Rome, told Italian police he had attended training camps in Scotland and Kent.

Ibrahim, who "appeared to be in charge" according to another witness, was stopped at Heathrow airport seven months before the attacks. He had £3,000 in cash, a first aid kit and a sleeping bag but told officials he was on his way to a friend's wedding in Pakistan.

His travelling companion had a section of a manual showing how to deal with gunshot wounds.

"He was detained so long he missed his flight, but appears to have flown out the next day," Mr Sweeney said.

On his return in March 2005, according to the witness who shared a flat with him, he showed him videos of jihad [holy war] in Bosnia, Chechnya and Afghanistan.

Between April 28 and July 5, the group bought 284 bottles of hydrogen peroxide costing £550 from shops in Finchley, Tottenham and Finsbury Park.

They drew up a rota and allegedly used Omar's flat in Southgate as a bomb factory, trying to boil the liquid into a more concentrated form on an electric stove.

The concentrated liquid was mixed with chapati flour to form the main charge and transferred into 6.25-litre clear plastic tubs. The detonator consisted of Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP), made by mixing nail varnish remover with hydrogen peroxide, which was put into a paper tube with a small lightbulb attached. Around the outside of each tub were taped about 80 screws, tacks, washers and nuts.

Wires from the detonator ran through the bottom of the men's rucksacks, through a hole in their clothing and into their pockets, where a connector for a 9v battery would have triggered the device.

"The would-be bomber would appear simply someone carrying a rucksack on their back," Mr Sweeney said.

"There would be no sign of the wires to the bomb in the rucksack and therefore the would-be bomber would be able to set off the bomb without any of his victims having any forewarning or any chance to stop him."

The men, dressed in dark suits and ties, watched impassively as the court was shown the effect the explosion might have had in experiments conducted by the Forensic Explosives Laboratory at Fort Halstead in Kent.

The jury was told the conspiracy had been in existence long before July 7. "It is our case that the events with which this case is concerned are plainly not some hastily-arranged copycat," Mr Sweeney said.

The court heard that Yahya, 24, left the country on June 11, more than a month before the attacks. On the evening of Wednesday, July 20, the men met at Mohammed's flat on the Peabody estate in North Kensington, setting off from there the following morning.

Mr Sweeney said there was also a "clear inference from the evidence that a suicide video was made at Delgarno Gardens."

Mohammed, Ibrahim and Omar drove to Stockwell, south London and set off separately for the Tube station. Mohammed, wearing a top with "New York" on it, tried to detonate his bomb in a tunnel near the Oval station on the Northern Line. He fled when the train pulled into the station and abandoned his top in Brixton.

Omar, travelling on the Victoria Line, tried to detonate his bomb as the train approached Warren Street. After escaping, he tried to enlist the help of passers-by.

Ibrahim, after leaving the Tube at Bank, caught the number 26 bus where he sat on the top deck trying to detonate his bomb. Osman attempted to detonate his bomb after leaving Latimer Road Tube station.

When the train pulled into Shepherd's Bush, he jumped into the back garden of a house near the tracks and fled. He made his way to Brighton but had left a gym card in the rucksack. Asiedu, said the prosecution, dumped his bomb at Little Wormwood Scrubs.

"He lost his nerve at the last moment," Mr Sweeney said.

The men returned to Curtis House in a "hasty attempt to clear out the bomb factory that night and the next day".

On July 22, a caretaker noticed the hydrogen peroxide bottles in rubbish and called the police but by the time they arrived, three days later, the men had fled.

Omar fled to Birmingham, leaving Golders Green coach station dressed in a burkha. He was arrested in the city.

    The trial continues............""!

What can one add - I find myself speechless that life goes on with this kind of thing being now part of the country. Someone should be help responsible for allowing such a situation to occur - for allowing the presence of such people here. But thats not how things are any more it seems . Life goes on - and we daily survive by virtue of luck! Not exactly a planned economy, is it!

Muslime terrorist training camps in the Lake District? Not so long ago the local farmers would have shifted that lot at gunpoint.

The whole thing is so utterly ABSURD it doesn't bear thinking about! Perhaps thats the government's attitude too.... is it the British people who have so lost their way that they forgotten how to say NO! Maybe Enfield made it impossible ... I sometimes think we are ruled these days by popstars and celebrities; statesmen (-eg blair ) are a thing of the past. Britain is becoming an idle joke - maybe that's what they want!!

Re: UK Trial of Muslim Bombers - survival by luck!

""Holiday trip, or a 'bomber' training camp?

    ""D Telegraph 18/01/2007

A Muslim extremist accused of launching a failed suicide attack was seen by police on three separate occasions in the months before, a court heard yesterday.

Muktar Ibrahim caught on police film in the Lake District
Muktar Ibrahim was among a group seen exercising and praying on a camping trip in the Lake District in pictures shown to a jury yesterday. He was arrested five months later, in Oct 2004, handing out Islamic literature from a table set up outside Debenhams in Oxford Street.

Then, in December 2004, Ibrahim was stopped at Terminal 3 of Heathrow airport as he made his way to Pakistan with a large amount of cash. He was questioned for almost four hours and allowed to go on his way.

Ibrahim is among six men accused of planning co-ordinated explosions on the London transport system two weeks after the July 7 attacks in 2005. The jury had been told that he was said by one witness to be one of those "in charge" of the group.

In surveillance pictures taken by Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorism squad 14 months before the July 21 attacks, five of the six men were seen on a Bank Holiday trip at a farm in Langdale, Cumbria. A group of about 20 were in tents in a field surrounded by dry stone walls at the top of the farm, well away from other campers.

Dc Mark Stevens, who was among the surveillance team, said the area was "heaving" with families on holiday.

His colleague, Dc Phillip Marshall, said: "I could see them milling around and running up and down.

"Some appeared to have rucksacks on their backs. They didn't appear to be running randomly. It was a series of men in a line, running."

When officers arrived at 11am on the Bank Holiday Monday in May 2004 the men, who had a teenager and two children with them, were packing up to leave. After going down to the farm they were seen lining up for prayer.

Yassin Omar, second from right, joins others in prayer at a camp site

The jury was shown photographs of Muktar Ibrahim, Ramzi Mohammed, Yassin Omar, Hussain Osman and Adel Yahya wearing hooded tops, anoraks and tracksuit or camouflage trousers.

Dc Louis Chryssaphis, a Special Branch officer, who stopped Ibrahim at Heathrow in Dec 2004, said he was questioned for almost four hours. He was said to have claimed to be going to the wedding of one of the men but was unable to provide the name of the bride.

He had £2,000 in cash and a Samsung video camera in a blue shoulder carrying case.

The jury at Woolwich Crown Court was told a Samsung video camera in a similar case was found in Rome when Hussain Osman was arrested.

Ibrahim also had two holdalls with a first-aid kit and a large sleeping bag and cold-weather outer garments. A Port Stop Request form recording the incident was filled in but the three men were allowed to travel on. A sixth man, Manfo Asiedu, was said to have thought about joining the Army after seeing an advert in a job centre soon after he arrived in Britain from Ghana but had dropped the idea.

Ibrahim, 28, Mohammed, 25, Omar, 26, Osman, 28, Asiedu, 33, and Yahya, 24, all from London, deny conspiracy to murder and cause explosions.

    The trial continues...........

Re: UK Trial of Muslim Bombers - survival by luck!

    Note from tonights news: 19Jan07

Suspects are reported as buying 200 litres of concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide from one shop-supplier,"PAK Cosmetics". They basically said it was for domestic cleaning use. It is a very powerful oxidant and creates explosive compounds when mixed with other readily available materials. In all they obtained over 400 litres of the stuff - causing some minor concern - but they got it all the same. They then proceeded to mix their brew - evidently unskillfully!

One would think that Pak-frequenting-types buying potentially exposive stoff would be better monitored. Perhaps there are already too many of them!

Well, racial profiling is more dangerous than terrorist bomb makers, don't you know?
