University Refuses to Remove Swastika from Entrance

A university refusing to remove a Nazi swastika symbol from its entrance hall has sparked irritation in Germany.

The Munich botanic faculty has a large black swastika, a symbol used by the Nazis, in the form of a tile mosaic on the floor of its entrance hall.

But university officials claim that the symbol does not refer to Nazism but rather to its original meaning as an ancient Indian symbol of the Sun.

Botanic professor Susanne Renner said: "The swastika in our house has nothing to do with the Nazis."

Professor Renner says that the ritual sign of the swastika, the ’sun wheel’, is common in many old cultures and that the Sanskrit word for swastika means lucky charm and is also a symbol of fertility.

I would think the German University system has more important things to worry about than a decoration on an old building.

I think the alternative to put up a plaque explaining its religious background is a good one, it could inform those who are not aware of its history and usage.

Some other old, non-Third Reich swastikas:

In a small german town in Niedersachsen there is an old customs building with a swastika on the walls. The swastika is decorated with 4 Germanic runes. When we took the photo, the owner of the building was suspicious. Other visitors had urged him to remove the swastika, but he refused. We are grateful for his help in preserving a piece of history. These runes stand for fidelity, truthfulness, willpower, inner peace, and faith. Here the Swastika is held in good spirits, and denotes: start every day anew and do not stray from the right path.

The mosaic floor comes from the house next door,a large city villa with the Dionysos-mosaic: The circles fitting together with 'fylfot', are an endlessly repeatable pattern for any desirable large room.

The mosaic: 2.-3. A.D. habitat: Cologne, cathedral south side.

Good for them. It is nice to see that they are educating people about the past not just sweeping it under a rug.

The Swastika is an honored symbol with the Hindus (It is always right-handed and in a pleasant color, red, yellow, orange, gold, silver, or white). The word is derived from Su (Good) + Asti (Is), so it means 'all is well'. It is used on many buildings, on all happy occasions, in all religious ceremonies. The ceremonies start (First thing) with drawing the symbol on the ground where they are to take place. We would not change it for anybody or anything in the world.

The court of the royal family of Nepal has swastikas all over the place. I witnessed it during a program they did on the world's remaining monarchies.

Re: University refuses to remove swastika from entrance

I searched for Swastik, Swastika, India in Google. Got hundreds of results. Swastik could be a boy's name, Swastika could be a girl's name, there are hundreds of businesses with names like Swastik Industries, Swastik Technologies, etc. Invitation cards to marriages and other happy occasions have Swastik on the front page. In short Swastika is pervasive in India. Here are a few samples.
    1. Swastik shaped building of Sanskrit department at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. 2. A basket decorated for use in Rakshabandhan ceremony in which sisters tie a thread on brothers' wrists to strengthen their relationship. 3. Mundan ceremony (tonsur) of a child. 4. Door hanging. 5. Chains at Ganges shore for safe guarding pilgrims. 6. House decor. 7. Diamond pendant. 8. Girl named Swastika looking for a groom. 9. Swastik, researcher at a university. 10. Deepawali decoration with lamps in shape of a swastika. 11. Peaceful co-existence, a hindu house next to a synagogue, jews lived peacefully in India for 1500 years. 12. Swastik plate for use in religious ceremonies. 13. This is special, the first recitation at any ceremony and its explanation. 14. Rice bag. 15. TV program. 16. Ship with swastika on the hull. 17. Merchandise decorated with swastika. 18. Box of sweets, not surprising if the shops name is Swastik Sweets. 19. A business with Swastik as name. 20. Gate of a temple decorated with swastikas. 21. A new motorised rikshaw, swastika for protection and customers. 22. Wanted to add a swastika Hindu flag, but I don't have the necessary permission.

I am sure the British Scouts had such a symbol in their awards in the very early days of the "movement" (?1920s - probably in a similar era to Svartr's English Christmas postcards.) . There was of course no political significance! Is it not also to be found in use in Tibetan religious rituals....often featured in some of their own festivals.
