    Re: Favorite animals

Nice analogy, Erzherzog_Bernd, it's interesting that two subspecies of lions lived in Europe (the cave lion as far north as Denmark) until about 2000 years ago. The true lions have long left Europe.

From the domestic animals, in addition to cat and dog breeds, I also like goats.

"Thor, Scandinavian god of thunder and fertility, has a chariot drawn by goats who are sacred to him; his goat Heidrun supplied the heavenly mead, the drink of the gods. In European literature and folklore, the goat often represented the determined, stubborn side of mankind."

    http://www.goatweb.com/discover/goats/myths.shtml

However, I have always associated them with innocence and naivete and they seem to feature prominently in novels about the rural spirit. Goats also seem to represent the beauty of the Alpine world (as in Johanna Spyri's "Heidi").
I also like lynx, cool pics, Glyndŵr, these felines seem to epithomize the power of the eye (there is the traditional belief that they have extremely sharp vision).

I am into exotic mammals myself:

    Maned wolf:

    American marten:

    Red panda:

Hyenids (but only the relatively tame ones):

Bears, symbols of strenght among others, have been known to be used on coats of arms as well. (e.g. Berlin)
Dogs, for loyalty and friendliness and especially puppies, they are so cute.
I would like to add OWLS to that group. Those birds touch something very deep in my psyche....
I believe that in Germanic mythology they symbolize wisdom... am I right?
