    Question Best Black Metal Bands?

I couldn't find any topics concerned solely with the discussion of black metal, so I decided to make one.

Specifically... what were the bands that really made you think about ancient European culture, and which bands create the music that sends you there in your thoughts?

For me, the bands that first opened a window to the past were Bathory, Burzum, old Satyricon, Ulver, Enslaved and Isengard. More recently I've found a lot of ancient heathen atmosphere in Jotunspor, Windir, Skyforger, Wongraven, Storm, Otyg, Primordial, Summoning (I know some of these aren't strictly black metal, but they are related and carry the same atmosphere in my opinion).

Opening a window to the past, I would like to add Nokturnal Mortum. Veles and Absurd are also good, both musically and as a link to the past.

    Sv: Black Metal

Sigrblot has the best lyrics ever, at least in swedish(They do have some in english). Other than that, Ulver is great, Månegarm is brilliant! Havets Vargar is a masterpiece. Of course Drudkh - Autumn Aurora is a masterpiece as well. All bands having folk or nationalistic lyrics.

Can anyone provide any links to some good examples of this Black Metal [maybe on Youtube?] for a person like me who's completely ignorant of the genre, and needing an introduction?

You're going to hate it - but here you go, woo

    Re: Black Metal

I don't buy into the 'Black metal' genre. It just sounds like noise. I can appreciate most other forms of metal, but I find it impossible to find beauty in the black metal vocals, which consist of nothing but tortuous screeching/growling. Instrumentally it isn't all that great, either - most of the drumming is just lame double bass, similarly the guitar is heavily distorted to disguise the fact that it isn't very complex. At all.

But maybe I'm just generalising here. If someone could suggest to me a black metal band that doesn't include all the above then I'll happily give it a listen. I listened to Burzum for awhile and tried to get into it. Really, I did. But I gave up after while. Anyway, I don't believe for a second either that you have to listen to black metal to get in touch with our ancestors. There are plenty of other genres that do it for me (post-rock, ambient, psychedelic rock, etc).

    Re: Black Metal

Glyndŵr try Enslaved (the more recent stuff: "Ruun", "Isa" and "Monumension"). HUGE prog-rock influence and they were originally one of the pioneers of black/viking metal. They have great production, lots of sung vocals, and a very mature grasp of Norse culture.

    Also Arcturus: hugely prog-influenced.

The thing is... as cliche as this is to say, Black Metal is not immediately acceptable. If someone had played me Darkthrone or Burzum as my first exposure to Black Metal, I would have given up on it then. Enslaved and Arcturus are stylistically different to typical black metal but are an important step towards understanding the genre.

Sure the musicianship and production is often poor, and the vocals incomprehensible, but you might begin to understand that it is these things which actually enhance to "ancient" feel of the music.

I was almost going to say "Funnily enough [and not entirely due to my desire to spite you, SuuT] I quite like it." BUT THEN - the vocals started...

Hehe, it must be fun to make this music [though bad for the throat], but I can't imagine buying it! [Not that I buy any music any way, unless at severely knocked down pirate prices ] The music's a bit boring - they sometimes nearly approach something I'd like, but never quite get there, not having the technical knowhow.

Are there really people on Earth who listen to ONLY this? I'm sorry now, this is not MY thread, I'll shut up now!

Sorry for my english... but i have to say i think you listened to "pure oldschool BM".
Listen to new songs by Absurd, Helrunar, Halgadom, Ulfhethnar, Leichenzug... and i bet you will find some songs you will like..

Yea. I'll say my peace and be gone, myself. (I do understand that this music can be an aquired taste...)

As a musician, I find the inability to escape root-fifth chords, 32nd notes, over done double-bass drums and the squelching sound of a dying beast pretty blase.

Frankly, I find more 'angry young man' than Germanic in it.

You want Germanic? - pick up some Wagner, Grieg, or Bach .
