If that were the case bands with black metal lyrics and aesthetics, such as Immolation and Deicide, would be classified as black metal. Obviously, both Immolation and Deicide are death metal bands.
Surturs Lohe are folky and upbeat, and viking/black metal would probably be a better classification for them, but that hardly makes them comparable to pop music. To say that they are not black metal even though they bear a sonic resemblance black metal bands is poor reasoning; musical genres are defined by how they sound, not their lyrical content. If this were the case, Emperor would be considered borderline black metal even on In the Nightside Eclipse, as the lyrics are mostly not Satanic or Anti-christian in content.
If you had read more carefully, you would know that i said "It's not ONLY about the sound.
Black Metal as only phrase is about Anti-Christianity, Satanism, Occultism, Death, Pain and all "bad" at all.
You can define that genre if there's for example a band which is "Pagan Black Metal" like Drudkh. Or "Depressive Black Metal" like "Make a Change kill yourself". Or NS Black Metal like "Flammentod" etc.

You said that it's about the lyrics first, and I responded accordingly.

Let's say you define the requirements for being a black metal band in terms of both musical style and lyrical content as being something along the lines of: "Tremolo picked riffs, high-pitched vocals, generates atmosphere, with lyrical themes of Anti-christian, Satanism, Occultism, Pain, Suffering etc."

Then isn't it a contradiction to call a band Pagan Black Metal, if the Pagan lyrics of the band don't encompass Anti-christian, Satanic, Occult, etc themes? There are bands like Ildjarn, Drudkh, Blut aus Nord, Aborym, Rakoth, whose lyrics don't fit the nihilistic archetype of black metal, but are black metal none the less.

While the musical style of Black Metal was conceived as something which channelled only nihilism and other 'dark' themes, it has grown into something far more broad than that.

    AW: Black Metal

Who cares what category it is? If it's good music then its good, and that's all that's important.

You're right. But still you might insult the artists with it.
Nobody likes to read incorrect things about their work.

    @firescarredmartyr

I never saw a Pagan Black metal band which isn't anti-christian.
So maybe you understand the comparing now.
Same goes to "Depressive Black Metal" like Blut aus Nord or Xasthur.
Which contain the black metal topics of Suffering and Pain.

I like German Black Metal the best. Bands like: Absurd, Bilskirnir/Odelegger, Camulos(they also play Death Metal), Halgadom, Heldentum, Magog(RIP), Totenburg, Ulfhethnar, etc.

    YouTube
does not have too much NSBM and it always seems like when they do it is removed after a short while.

I would like to add Aborym. They are a Bizarre BM band influenced by a kind of ''Esoteric NS'' , as can be perceived in their music/cd titles...''Wehrmacht Kali Ma'' , ''Kali Yuga Bizzare'', ''Sol sigillum '', ''white Space'', etc.

    @ Euclides:

You really think Aborym? I am a HUGE Aborym fan, but I think they are the opposite to a "link to the past". For me, Aborym is a pure bleak vision of the future... and for some masochistic reason, I enjoy it.

I am an Aborym Fan since 1998...
In fact they play an ''avantgard'' black metal that usually doesn't sounds good for the old school black metal purists.
