    Garlic - Grow Your Own

    Garlic - Grow Your Own

With the 21st Winter Solstice tomorrow, I am suggesting to everyone (including myself), that they learn to plant some Garlic. So grab some pots and plant away for a harvest next June.

"Spring Planting Garlic. T&M's Choice. Easy to grow and good for you.
Preferring a light, rich soil. Separate the bulbs into individual cloves and plant just below the surface in late winter/early spring. Lift and dry the bulbs in late summer and store cool."

    Winter Planting - Garlic
    Autumn Planting - Albigensian Wight
    Autumn Planting - Early Wight
    Spring Planting - Elephant Garlic
    Autumn Planting - Purple Wight
    Autumn Planting - Wight Cristo

Note: if there is anyone who has a bit of experience with growing Garlic, then please mention - which way up to plant the garlic bulb, flat end or pointed end.

    Thankyou.

i grow many varieties of garlic, commercially -
    after dividing the cloves,
    i always plant them
with the growing tip pointed up.

many of my customers are surprised to discover that...

most of the garlic i sell
    to restaurants and individual subscribers

is in the form of "greens"
    from the soft-necked varieties
    - these are the outer-most layer of leaves
harvested daily along with the salad-mix
that i gather in the same fashion:

by plucking only the outer-most leaves
and allowing the plant to continue growing -

and "spears" (à la asparagus, which i also sell)
from the hard-necked types of garlic.

if there is sudden hot weather
which causes the plants to "bolt" a seed-head,
i pinch those off and sell them
    as a delicacy.

    lacking the clement year-round growing-environment
of southern california (which is why i chose this area),
    you may cultivate garlic
as an in-doors potted plant for the same delicious results.

one of my many suppliers for the varietal/heirloom vegetables
and fruits in which my farm specialises.
