That by moving here they automatically have the right to call themselves one of us and have a right to the hard graft and identity forged of my ancestors just by popping out some sprogs thereby stealing what effectively is our blood given birthright alone.

All Scots wear kilts, we hunt haggis, it's always raining, we enjoy the local farmyard animals a bit too much, we're all ginger and miss out the letter "T" in every word.

That my being from America means that I must be familiar with New York, L.A., and Chicago.

That psychotic gun-slinging white trash simply stroll into the woods and start blasting away at all the copious innocent furry creatures, and this constitutes hunting and rural culture in America. (Of course many Americans believe this too.)

I am sorry, but I had a Scotsman in my house the other day and he fulfilled most of what I expected of him in his speech. I had a sense of satisfaction when he kept saying "aye", and especially when he actually said "a wee li'le bi' of".

Ahem....now this ought to be fun

    - All Greeks are lazy and incompetent government employes who get paid ridiculously large salaries and benefits.

Much as this is true for a certain number of people who are responsible for the stereotype in the first place, they're not even 20% of the population.
The people working in the private sector or those who are self-employed have to work really hard, long hours, and get paid really measly salaries. And that was in the past too, now we are all unemployed anyway.

    - Greeks are laid back, careless party animals who sit in the sun all day and drink ouzo and coffee frappe

Much as I wish this were true at this point, it is very much not so. All of my acquaintances, few people excluded, are depressed, nobody goes out (due to finances but also due to lack of mood), nobody parties and nobody is glad.

    - Life is easy and fun in Greece.

For a country that used to take pride in having one of the lowest suicide rates in Europe, we now have a very fast growing suicide rate. Every day there is four or five such instances in the news, and I believe those are being publicized because of the way they happen (other "silent" suicides are not).

For example, one jumped off his balcony when the public clerk came to hand him over an eviction notice.

One stood up from his office without saying a word, climbed on top of the Acropolis hill and jumped off of it.

One shot himself in the head amidst bystanders in Syntagma square at 8am when everybody is going to work.

and so on, and so forth....

    -Greeks demand money from Europe

Strange as it may sound, a good majority of the population does not. They would rather have Greece default and be left alone, horrible as the consequences may be. The electoral result reflected that clearly. There was a clear overall preference towards anti-bailout parties but they managed to cook the results in such a way that a pro-bailout coalition was formed.

    - Greeks are lazy overall

True as that may be for some Greeks, a lot, dare I say, there is also a lot of us who are not lazy at all. The thing is that in this country, if you want, for example, to start your own business, you are strangled by endless bureaucratic procedures and obstacles, lack of understanding for your ideas and fear of innovation and in the end you manage nothing. Hence, the majority of talented, hardworking Greeks with innovative ideas will thrive abroad, and we suffer from a huge brain drain. And the ones that are left here are usually the incompetent and stupid people who manage to get by somehow, and also people who want to work but cannot find any work to do.

    - Greeks have too much vacation

In the public sector I don't know, but in the private sector where I have worked it is strictly 20 days/ year. I know in other European countries there is more vacation days so I don't think we have so much.

Feel free to ask for clarification concerning any stereotype I might have forgotten to mention. I will answer truthfully

Probably the silliest belief about Denmark is that the statue of The Little Mermaid is a great tourist attraction when it is just a tiny statue in the middle of nowhere. I could name dozens of more interesting things for tourists to see.

Another one common to especially Chinese tourists is that Denmark is supposed to be one big H.C. Andersen theme park and Chinese frequently complain that there is little to anything pertaining to H.C. Andersen in Copenhagen (H.C. Andersen was born and lived in Odense, which is where his house still stands today as a museum). They think that modern Denmark should be quaint and adorable like the stories, instead of looking like a real country.

And many people still believe that Denmark only has agriculture and that we all make our living in something relating to agricultural products (Lurpak butter and Danish bacon): In reality, less then five percent of the labour force works directly with agriculture. A good deal more works indirectly with agriculture but the facts are that post-WWII Danish economy is post-agricultural and post-industrial: We pretty much invented container shipping, anti-depressants, wind power and modern furniture and have an advanced biotech sector that few people seem to appreciate or even know about.

And one final thing: Would everybody please tell everyone you know that IKEA is SWEDISH, not Danish? If I had a krone for every time a foreigner had told me that they love Denmark because of IKEA I would be a billionaire.
