    Black Sun and the Irminsul

I'm sure that many of us are familiar with the image on the cover of Varg's "Irminsul" book, on which appears the Irminsul sprouting from the center of a Black Sun.

My question is this: where does the linking of these two symbols come from?
Is there any historical precident for this? Is there an established meaning of these two symbols cojoined? I have my own theories on the latter, but would first like to see if work has been done on this before.

Re: Black Sun and the Irminsul

OK, here's what I've been thinking thus far. The Black Sun is, in some way, a representation of an aspect of the Solar power in the universe. Also, keep in mind that in most cultures besides that of the Greeks, the Sun is a feminine symbol. So, it seems to me that the Black Sun glyph is of a similar nature to the traditional Vedic symbol of the Black Egg, which is the element of Spirit (Akasha). Now, this Black Egg, in Hindu Tattwa theory, is the form that the spirit takes in Man, which is the latent form. In other words the true power behind this Solar force is currently dormant. Now, how does this relate to the germanic mythos? We know from Icelandic Sagas, and the Niebelungenlied the story of Sigfried and Brunhilde the Walkurie. In the story Brunhilde lies sleeping in a ring of fire and is awakened by the Hero Sigfried. To the ancient germanic peoples, everyone had assigned to them (much in the same way that Brunhilde and Sigfried were fated for one another) a valkyrja (also called a fylgja). This fylgja, although bound to each man, also lies dormant and is generally not in contact with the person. However by doing certain things and behaving in certain ways (perhaps Being in the mode of Authenticity, as Heidegger would say), the valkyrja could be, just like in the Story, awakened. So, our current version of the Black Sun shows what appears to be Solar symbol (the twelve spoked wheel) surrounded by 12 Sowilo runes. To me, this shows the personal solar goddess (the wheel) surrounded by a circle of solar flame (the 12 S runes). And how does the Irminsul come into play? It is generally thought that the Irminsul is was connected with the original head of the germanic pantheon, Tiwaz, who at that time was primarily a god of cosmic order. The Irminsul, was this force of Law that maintained the balance between the Earth and Sky. Without this order, the world would fall into entropic chaos and be destroyed. And let it not be forgotten that Tyr is also a warrior God. He maintains that ballance not by acting as a passuve agent, but as an active force (i.e. gravity). So, when we combine the idea of Will-driven order personified as a warrior with the maiden lying in wait behing the wall of flame, our result is, naturaly, the union of the two to form something greater than each part; an analogy that fits quite well with Jungs theory of the Self's relation to the Anima. So, for us, it is by the awakening of this latent Solar Flame within that we are able to maximize our potential as human beings and bring into order (Irminsul) our previously hidden (Black Sun) aspects.

    Psychonaut,

When I read your description a couple of weeks ago I was glad to see a reference to fylgja. In my most recent post in the subject Saturday thread I make reference to this concept. It is one which has been at the fore of my thinking since I discovered it years ago but I have never studied it closely or discussed it very much. I'm glad to know it is familiar to you.

I wonder if most Black Sun adherents have a personal sense of a "shadow self" or "inner voice?" Has anyone else experienced what modern paranormal researchers refer to as clairaudience?

I don´t see any kinship with Schwarze Sonne and Irminsűl. In the case of Varg´s book I think that the front picture is only illustration without deeper sense.

Is it just me? Or are the voices in my head really loud today? Hahahaha! Anyway, I really love this stuff. It is great to learn of our ancestor's beliefs. And it is not just pagan religions either. I believe that they had a firm grasp on the Germanic's deep psychological makeup. And the wise ones of lore used stories to explain these things to our Folk. Unlike the jew-dominated psychology of today which infects our people's brains with filth.

Currently, I am beginning a study of the Temple of Wotan, a book on the Occult origins of Nazism, a book on Druids, and Runic Tarot. I hope to create a Pan Pagan forum which will help unite and enlighten our Folk worldwide as well. Ideas are welcome. And unlike the anti-pagan christian types, even christians will be welcome to discover their shared pagan traditions and origins as well as their ancestor's histories with us.

Even the rims for my car I am buying resemble the Black Sun. Hee hee.

Re: Black Sun and the Irminsul

First off, I have not read the book in its entirety, nor am I very familiar with the whole Black Sun mythos. However, in my first interpretation of the image the equation of Irminsul with the heart of the Black Sun was not that odd, provided Irminsul is interpreted as the pillar of the world and the core of the Black Sun as the metaphysical centre of the world. The two are then different symbols for the same metaphysical principle.

Re: Black Sun and the Irminsul

I have never read Varg's book "Irminsul", but the image of the Irminsul sprouting forth from the centre of the Black Sun does make sense. I would like to interpret the Black Sun as a specific cosmic event in the years to come.

In anthroposophical teaching a cosmic year represents the platonic year (German: "Platonisches Weltenjahr"), which is said to last 25920 years. This is the time that the Sun requires to traverse the complete zodiac from its position in spring equinox. The division of the platonic year into 12 'months' (German: "Weltenmonate") is obvious. On average, each zodiac sign therefore covers about 2160 years.

The image of the Black Sun is surrounded by the twelve-spoked wheel, which could also symbolize the twelve Zodiac signs. While it is believed that the Age of Pisces presently draws to an end with violent upheavals and natural catastrophes, the sun will begin a new platonic year with the Age of Aquarius.

A 19th-century Franconian prophecy, which has been discussed in detail in the
Song of the Ancient Linden-Thread, mentions two images that I think could refer indirectly to the Heathen Irminsul and to the Black Sun-concept. In verse 4 the old linden is being described as having been reduced to two mighty branching boughs, similar to the Irminsul of the Saxons, which could have been a wooden oak tree sculpture. I think that these two boughs might point to the Irminsul that was said to be destroyed by Charlemagne (German: "Karl der Große"]. The T-shaped crucifix of St. Antony (who is mentioned in verse 30) might also allude to Irminsul.

    Verse 4:
No painting nor book have portrayed your crown
Whose boughs are now all lost
    Save two, branching mightily,
Their leaves climbing joyfully to the heavens.

Furthermore, in verse 16 "three days of darkness" are mentioned, which I believe will be (at least partly) the consequence of a polar shift. During these three days, the sun might not be visible for one specific hemisphere; hence the image of the "Black Sun" that cannot be seen.

    Verse 16:
Winter will arrive, three days of darkness
Thunder and lighting and the earth's fissure.
Pray at home, do not leave your dwelling!
Nor dare to watch the horror from a window!

The upcoming events described in the Song of the Ancient Linden as well as other German prophecies are said to usher in a new 'Golden Age of Germany'. The Black Sun, that is the events at the time of the polar shift, is the signal when this day and age will have arrived.

    Verse 30:
When the angel-like shepherd of nations,
Becomes a wayfarer like St. Antony,
And preaches barefoot to those who have gone astray
A new spring will smile upon the whole world.

I suspect that it might also be very rewarding to study the astronomic constellation Cetus ("the Whale" or "the Sea Monster") very carefully, bearing in mind that the top of Irminsul is shaped like a whale's tail. Perhaps a comet emanating out of this star constellation could indicate the precise timing of the upcoming events.
