    Official LOTR Thread

I was surprised there was none (that I could find). Someone stick this thread, quick!

I hate the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with a passion. But I know most members on Skadi love it. Discuss anything LOTR related here.

I expect lots of rep and thanks for making this thread.

    j/k

Well, my friend, you're going to get rep and thanks whether you like it or not from me because I love LOTR and Tolkien.

I liked the movies, but Im not going to rant on endlessly about why or how my life is devoid of any and all meaning without LOTR.

Does anybody here have any info about upcoming (?) "Hobbit"-movie? I'm too lazy too search for it in the net.

    AW: Official LOTR Thread

LOTR is a nice story, but it draws its magic from germanic and celtic myth and real historical events. Only a few know that Tolkien was inspired by the "Saga of Hervor and King Heidrek", which has as main issue the fight between the "Men of the West" and the forces of the east. The men of the west were represented by the Late Western Roman Empire (Gondor), led by Flavius Aetius, and a confederation of Germanic Tribes (Rohirrim) that came to their aid at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields (Pelennor Fields) and defeated the forces of the east, the Huns, led by Attila plus his Germanic Vassals, in a desperate fight.

This battle was not fought in front of Minas Tirit but Orleans, but it was nevertheless as important for Europe as it was for Gondor.

    Re: Official LOTR Thread

The LOTR books are excellent. I read them 3 times. But I don't like the movies, though... I like Frodo and Gollum in them

EDIT: Golum is Tronder with some mongoloid features.

    Re: AW: Official LOTR Thread

LOTR is a great example of European Romanticism which is a very important artistic movement for me. I hate the movies though - the book is way better.

Tolkien was also highly influenced by Finnish myths and language. For example, Quenya, a language spoken by elves, reminds Finnish very much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quenya

The Finnish-Karelian national epic Kalevala was one of Tolkien's main inspiration sources.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalevala
The most famous example of the Kalevala's influence upon another author is most likely with J.R.R. Tolkien. He claimed the Kalevala as one of his sources for the writings which became the Silmarillion. For example, the story of Kullervo has been extensively used in the Silmarillion (including the sword that speaks when the anti-hero uses it for a suicide) as the basis of Túrin Turambar in Narn i Chîn Húrin. Echoes of the Kalevala's characters, Väinämöinen in particular, can also be found in the wizards of The Lord of the Rings.

Yeah, I know about karelia, the Kalevala the kantele and so on. I really enjoy in every word of the Kalavala (but I don't speak Finnish that good. Just some words ), and in the sound of the kantela.

@Ovid: Have you every heard of Merja Soria? I'm trying to find a place where I can download her songs. Can you help me with that.
