If you like H.P. Lovecraft, you may also have read August Derleth, who collaborated with Lovecraft and whose writings are even more dreamy, poetic, fantastic.

In case Derleth is new to you, here's a good introduction to the man and his writings:

I also have enjoyed Tolkien (esp. for Silmarillion), et al. but wanted to mention some others. In general I prefer those with a less wordy, clean, original style, pulpish a bit is okay too. Poul Anderson's fantasy books have been good, though I haven't read the sci-fi one's.

I have never even heard the name of MacDonald. What kind of books has he written?

He was a scottish writer, wrote a lot of fiction, mostly in realistic settings, book of short stories. His book _Phantastes_ is an early "fantasy" novel in which the fantasty realm is through some sort of dreamlike entry. Very strange and original. Also he wrote _At the Back of the North Wind_, and a few for kids like _Princess & Curdie_ or _Princess & the Goblin_. This was late 19th century I believe.
