A Third of Icelanders See Immigration as “Big Problem”

About 33 percent of respondents to a recent poll characterized the increase in foreign-born residents in Iceland as a “big problem.”

The nation-wide poll was undertaken by daily newspaper Fréttabladid.

Forty three percent of respondents said they find increasing immigration a “small problem,” and the remaining 23.6 percent do not perceive it as a problem at all.

The poll also revealed that about 70 percent of Icelanders would like to see increased restrictions on the granting of residence permits.

Political scientist Birgir Hermannsson told Fréttabladid that since immigration has steadily increased in recent years in Iceland, people might worry about increase in crime.

Einar Skúlason, manager of the Intercultural Center in Reykjavík, told the paper that it is easy to find problems caused by foreigners if people go out looking for them, but in his opinion the increase in foreigners does not affect the society negatively.

“It has been revealed that comparatively Icelanders are more likely to commit crimes than foreigners,” Skúlason said.

Skúlason added that he doubts people realize how hard it is for foreigners to get residence permits, as many applicants are rejected, especially those from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

Lets hope that Iceland makes harsh immigration laws against any non-caucasians.

Sv: A third of Icelanders see immigration as “big problem”

I advice the Icelenders to only accept foreighn cultural immagrants that arrives swimming, and can prove that they has swimmed from any continent.

Iceland is specially vulnerable according to its number of population, and the breeding rates of blacks.

But still Iceland is not so pestilenced as its neigbouring nations, it is still a cultural and genetic bolwork and stronghold, probably the cleanest in Europe?

Special attention should rest at Iceland, as we at least needs on European zone that is not overrun.

For a country of such a small size, it has one of the highest living standards in the world. I guess that's what attracts them.

I didn't mean it like this.
A Nigerian or a Chinese need to improvise (and have a lot of imagination as well) a lot to end up in Iceland.

    It is!

For example, according to the Iceland Census 2005, there are less than 600 muslims living in Iceland. That is a percentage of under 0,1%.
Anyway, the island drifts very very slightly into danger without a change in immigration policies. There are also some blacks, mostly in the capital city Reykjavik. Bot not really much. Most of them are US soldiers who are stationated on the island.

    Further results of this census:

10,636 people (3.6% of the total population) had foreign citizenship. The most populous nationalities are Polish (1903), Danish (890), ex-Yugoslavians (670), Filipinos (647) and Germans (540).

Heheh, yes, that's true. Perhaps they feel emigrating to mainland Europe is too cliché. From what I understand it's mostly Muslims who are moving there. They call Islam a religion of peace, when really they seek to assimilate each and every European country into their barbaric Islamic religion. I don't think ANYONE should be moving to Iceland, Chinese, Europeans, Africans, let alone Muslims. It's a pinnacle of culture and traditions well preserved, which can be easily influenced from outside contact. I see them as the 'purest' Germanic nation, it would really annoy me to see Icelandic culture disappear.

    - The soldiers will soon be gone, I presume (?). Until 1990 only white Americans were allowed to stay at the Keflavik military base, as far as I know.

    - Do you know the number of non-Westerners having Icelandic citizenship?
