Thumbs Up Namibi: Swart haatsprekers in hof

    Swart haatsprekers in hof

Botha is dood.

How do you view this opinion, Euhesperides?

AW: Namibi: Swart haatsprekers in hof

    Hate speech case delayed

    WERNER MENGES

THE case against two men who face a charge under the Racial Discrimination Prohibition Act after they allegedly paraded a placard bearing the slogan 'Kill all whites' down Windhoek's main street has again been postponed for the Prosecutor General to make a decision.

Gerson Ndjavera, who is alleged to have carried the offensive placard along Independence Avenue during a demonstration on August 24 last year, and Methuzal ('Malcolm X') Matundu, a fellow suspect who has publicly proclaimed he was the proud creator of the placard, made their fifth court appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Public Prosecutor Amiz Adams asked Assistant Magistrate Joseph Libana to postpone the matter to February 12 to give the Prosecutor General more time to make a decision.

This is to be a final postponement for a decision by the Prosecutor General.

Matundu remarked to the Assistant Magistrate that he wanted the State to ensure that a decision was taken, as he was in danger of forfeiting a scholarship he had been awarded if the matter was not finalised soon.

After the duo's appearance, Matundu reportedly told journalists an outlandish tale: that the scholarship was for a period of study in Afghanistan at an institution under the wing of one Osama bin Laden.

There he would learn how to bomb white people and their homes, he reportedly announced.

Matundu has previously told The Namibian that his call for white people to be killed was part of a "black revolutionary" strategy to repossess all wealth that he claimed white people had amassed at the expense of black people in Namibia.

Matundu and Ndjavera remain free on bail of N$500 each until their next scheduled court appearance.

They are charged with contravening two sections of the Racial Discrimination Prohibition Act of 1991.

These parts of the law prohibit any act, the use of any language, and the display of any article that is intended to threaten any person or group on the grounds of the racial group that the person belongs to, or that is intended to cause, encourage or incite hatred between different racial groups.

The maximum penalties that the Act lays down for breaking these parts of the law are a fine of N$100 000 or imprisonment of 15 years, or both.
