    Re: Crossbows

I don't think the crossbow matches the bow and arrow in terms of popularity.

Re: Crossbows vs bow and arrow

As an archer I shun the crossbow for it's slow reloading in battle, but the bow arrow is quick and fierce. The crossbow is good if you want an easy way to aim, and to learn it within a week, since it can take some years to learn the art of the bow..

AW: Crossbows vs bow and arrow

    Very simple

Bow: Better Range, involves a lot of skill = training

Crossbow: Poor Range, involves no skill.
You could equip every peasant with a crossbow to a devastating effect.
The armour penetration of the short metal bolts fired from a crossbow were devastating.

The best argument why a crossbow was far superior is the following historical fact:
The catholic church forbid the use of this weapon in battle because of its efficiency.
Thus the crossbow never really saw combat in Europe, at least in battles between two christian armies.

Of course an archer is much more admirable than a crossbowman because of the higher skill requirements, that doesn't change the fact that a crossbow was lightyears ahead of a bow.

    Very precisely, dear Archer!

But, if we consider a really fighting-archery then:
