Netherlands: Verdonk backs burka ban to help Muslim integration

Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk is in favour of imposing a ban on the wearing of a burka in public spaces.

The Liberal VVD told MPs on Thursday night the face-covering clothing is a symbol of division (between the West and Islam) and was not in harmony with the integration of Muslims and the emancipation of women.

But Christian Democrat CDA Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin refused to confirm after the parliamentary debate whether he supported Verdonk's proposal, stressing that now was not the time for differences in opinions between ministers.

However, Hirsch Ballin also said Verdonk was speaking from an integration perspective, while the commission of seven experts that was advising the Cabinet about a possible burka ban had a broader focus.

The commission will need to balance the constitutional rights of citizens against the public opposition against the burka. How the Islamic community views the burka will also need to be assessed.

The commission — which includes lawyers, an Arabist and an imam — must issue recommendations to government ministers at the start of November. The Cabinet will then make a decision, Verdonk said.

One of the options being studied is whether a general ban on the burka is possible under current regulations. It will then also be assessed whether a ban wearing a burka can be justified based on issues of safety and public order.

The final option is whether a ban can be imposed via existing regulations such as a general local ordinance or compulsory identification laws.

Government ministers had been called back to the Parliament to explain why they had not yet imposed a ban on the burka, as demanded by MPs in December at the initiative of Geert Wilders. It had previously been revealed that the cabinet was divided over the issue.

    Holland to outlaw the Burqa!

The Dutch government is about to forbid anyone from wearing the Burqa in public. As a result of increasing concern over the threat of terrorist action, being in a public place whilst dressed in such a way which prevents the identification of the person's face is considered to be a liberty too far. Such a ban will include head to toe Islamic garments and , it is understood , face covering Veils. Since the ban applies to everyone, the government rejects the notion that it constitutes a discriminatory measure.

Whilst the primary justification is on grounds of public order , security and the general protection of all citizens, the forward looking immigration minister Rita Verdonk ( also apparently known as "Iron Rita" - ! ) made it clear that she personally thinks that such garments might tend to add to the repression of women.

There is, I believe, a general election in Holland next week. All Germanics of good will should wish them good fortune in their party choices!

    I don't think that'll be an issue:

However, unless all the Muslims are in Amsterdam getting high, I do believe we'll see some rioting à la France.

    Merely occasional, aren't they ?

Suicide-bombings aren't usual as well (thus also kind of "occasional"), but at a wedding police can guess the intention

How did we go from sexy Dirndls to filthy Burqas in the first place should be the real concern. It is not the item of clothing which is so abrasive. It is the willful refusal to assimilate into our Kultur which is offensive. Worse still, do we really want them to assimilate fully into our lands and pollute our gene pool and use up our precious natural resources? Kaiser says, Nein! Get these people out of here now. Let them wear their own clothes. Back where they came from. And as they leave, let them take a liberal and a joo with them under each arm.

We must secure the existence of Our Volk and a future for Germanic Children.

Well, I think the security-aspect shouldn't be underestimated.

To begin with nowadays it's, at least in Germany, the first and probably only point to have a serious conversation about that topic in which you are taken seriously.
Yes, there are other, much more important arguments against this culture-export and yes, we won't change our opinion just for the sake of political correctness, but because of pragmatism we sometimes have to accomodate to the public level/opinion if we want to be successful.

Furthermore I don't think foreign cultures in our countries are a problem per se, it's a question of quantity and quality (not of the culture, as each culture is worth the same to its specific people, but of the representatives), so wearing a Burqua is one thing, but if the native population is in danger because of hidden bombs/guns/whatever or if everything I see are Burquas all around me, then we have to intervent.

Re: AW: Holland to outlaw the Burqa!

We did have a situation in England very recently where a be-Burqua'd legal advocate (?) was in court. ( Immigration appeal I believe ). The Judge complained that he could not hear her words & obviously couldn't see her face to judge the content of her expression. She was therefore asked to remove the facial aspect. When she refused, the Judge suspended the hearing. She subsequently again insisted on her refusal - and so therefore was replaced by her own firm, by a more senior operator - who himself was a Sikh !! ( I don't know whether he was wearing a dagger or whatever! probably just a turban . )
So ist es hier heute !
