    Scientific Explanation for Hazel Eyes?

What is the deal with hazel eyes? I can't find any satisfying scientific explanation for them everywhere I've looked, just speculation. Are they a brown/green crossover in eye color? My father, brother and I all have hazel eyes, my mother had green eyes, and my sister has blue eyes. What populations are they most prevalent in?

Human eyes may all be naturally blue or grey. Melanin is a yellowish substance. When it's in high concentration it looks black. When it's light concentration the yellow and blue make Hazel.

the fact is that hazel doesnt exist. Find me 10 people who can agree what "hazel" consists of, and I'll find you a retriever who wont retrieve. It just doest happen. Hazel is just a mix of colors or people who have brown eyes and want to sound special.

I have found "hazel" to be similar on the mendelian charts to brown, dominant over blue, typically.

    Re: Hazel eyes

    Hazel

Hazel eyes are the product of moderate amounts of melanin.[4] A number of studies using three-point scales have assigned "hazel" to be the medium-color between brown and blue.[19][20][21][22][23][24][25]
There is some difficulty in defining the eye color "hazel" as it sometimes considered to be synonymous with brown and other times with green.[26][14][19][21][24][27] They have been described as light brown or yellowish brown,[28] or as a lighter shade of brown.[29] Hazel eyes have also been described as being equivalent to blue/gray.[30]

    Re: Hazel eyes

Best I can tell is that "hazel" is when you have eyes that contain or could be considered more than one color.
I've had people tell me my eyes are hazel because they have green and brown in them. Although they look more blue and green close up. (I say they are green.)

Your eyes are from the brown side of green, and could be called as hazel methinks.

Finns don't have a word for hazel, hazel eyes are usually called just brown. The real brown eyes are extremely rare here.

I'd call that green. Sure, they're brown around the pupil, but they are mostly green.
