This was my impression also. How was 300 Spartans? I don't recall a review from Blood Axis. Since the new Beowulf movie's trailer looks like 300 Spartans on steriods, a few words of review of the original would be nice.

Beowulf, much like Volsung Saga and the other epic sagas of the Germans are a mix of ancient history, mythological elements and a good story. Beowulf and Hrölf Kraki are branches of the same of chain of events that seemed to record a war between the Geats and the Swedes. A lot of the persons, places and things have been discovered to be indeed real. In the nature of skaldic poetry, inwhich the facts are preserved and wrapped in the individual skalds own story telling preferences, the stories changed over time slightly.

The Volsung Saga has many real people in it's story. The part about Attila the Hun being murdered by his own wife go's along with another account of how he died. His own men said that he died of "unknown causes" or something like that. Historians typically make up their own reason they believe or agree with his soldier's reasoning however we have more than one account that he was murdered by his own wife. This must have been truly embarressing and is the reason for the cover up.

Leof i find all your post on my Threads to be of use as we do share a common faith in the Asa Gods, yes the Volsung is a great saga, the Book by John Grigsby mentions Holf Kraki and a few other sagas if you find it give it a read

300 was a truly awesome movie, with a great nationalist theme. The bad guys are portrayed in a parody of their racial characteristics, and the heroes talk about fighting against "the vast hordes of Asia". The cinematography is similar to Sin City, which was also derived from a graphic novel, I liked it but some people don't.

I saw the Canadian Beowulf (I don't recall the title, I think it was Beowulf and Grendel), and it was horrible and disgusting. Grendel was just some nice retarded fellow and the Danes were all evil, dirty Pagans. eyes:

The new one looks even worse. I've only ever seen one good movie in that type of animation, so I am having my doubts. And to add to that, its made by Hollywood. Sure to be filled with sex and they might throw a few minorities in too.

I saw the 3D Animated Beowulf (2007) and it was one of the greatest films I've ever seen. It has Anthony Hopkins, and the people who developed the film, the writers and such were really knowledgable in the thematics and depth of fairy tales and mythology. The film was deep in symbolism and rich in imagery. It should get multiple Oscars, but I'm sure the academy won't appreciate its genius.

I just got back from seeing Beowulf. I ended up seeing it at a regular theater. It took many liberties with the original story but I think that it worked very well. I really enjoied Grendel speaking in Old English and his mother in both Old and Modern english.

It seemed to play nicely to both the 50's sword and sandal movie themes and poking fun at itself without mocking the story. A trust the story but not nessasaily the storyteller feeling helped me really enjoy it. I am now really amused at the christian reviews that whine about it having a flawed protaganist and the heathens that say that the roman god christ, Jesus was not that popular yet.

Wiglaf, Waethrow and Hrothgar are my favorites but I found Beowulf a great charater as well. I want to go on but I think it is a better to see it yourself. The dragon is just incredably done.

I saw the Canadian Beowulf (I don't recall the title, I think it was Beowulf and Grendel), and it was horrible and disgusting. Grendel was just some nice retarded fellow and the Danes were all evil, dirty Pagans
I did not find that Grendel 'a nice retarded fellow' but a crossbreed who sought vengence for his father. The christian priest in the movie was quite mad so much so that even a monster did not want to touch him. If anything I found Beowulf too modern in his personality. The new Beowulf is definately not too modern/sensitive.

Funny that as I was reading ladybright's post, a friend...

I just saw BEOWULF. It is a veritable masterpiece! It is shamelessly politically incorrect. It is not American in style but European. It mocks Christianity and celebrates the Nordic warrior ethos. You must watch it!
What do you think? (I haven't seen it myself yet) :p
