‘Dutch’ Batavians More Roman Than Thought

‘Dutch’ Batavians More Roman Than Thought

The Batavians, who lived in the Netherlands at the start of the Christian era were far more Roman than was previously thought. After just a few decades of Roman occupation, the Batavians had become so integrated that they cooked, built and bathed in a Roman manner. Interesting, although I remember reading about the relatively Roman lifestyle of the Batavians several years ago already. But that news could've been based on earlier, preliminary conclusions of Heeren.

By the way, the appetite for young boys is something the Batavians didn't adopt from the Romans. In fact, the Roman habit of assaulting the sons of Batavia was part of what triggered the rebellion.

In honesty though, it could be that the Batavians were perturbed at having a supposed ally touch theirs, and that they were not averse to touching slave boys themselves. However, I don't remember any sources pointing to such perverted behaviour among any of the Germanic tribes.
