Had read that book myself quit some time ago. Was indeed interesting. Espaily how Grendel and his mother could maybe link to old Vanic practices and Beowulf is symbolising the rising warior aristocracy and their Asgaarding Gods.

Not very good. I've seen a film based on the text before and it was completely inaccurate. I saw a trailer for this new film and was very sad. It's not going to be anything like the original poem, it seems. It would be better to read than watch, in this case.

I saw this book on a shelf back in America. It looked to me like a new ager once again cashing in on the rampant ignorance people have of their own heritage. Feel free to enlighten me if I am wrong.

If you want a more in depth look at Beowulf asside from the rather short yet dramatic epic we have in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, please read the Saga of Hrölf Kraki. It is from the same collection of sagas as Beowulf and is essentially the same story. It is based on true happenings though a great deal of mythology is now centered around it just like the Volsung Saga.

Volsung and Beowulf are essentially the Hercules of the north.

And thus far every Beowulf movie has been a tragic waste of time

you are wrong about that book its a great read, and worth the money you would spend buying it

My ten year old son is mad about Norse tales, and he loves Odin!

I'm sure he will be interested in this sort of movie, no matter how good or bad. If it's full of action that will be good enough.

On the subject of Norse books, I find that they are rather hard to get hold of. I might have to browse online or second hand stores

Well the book is a great read for the fatc about Germania/England/Scandza

it mentions about the Tribes and the forgotten shrines, the Bog people, and Nerthus the Godess and her in relation to the Grendels Mother
