    Racial tensions explode again

Ellen Whinnett, Luke McIlveen and Gemma Jones

SIMMERING racial tensions exploded in Sydney again last night as police traced chilling new text messages inciting further violence.

Groups of Middle-Eastern men descended on Cronulla seeking revenge for Sunday's attacks, smashing cars with baseball bats.

There were reports of shots being fired and of police being driven at as running battles were fought.

The area had been peaceful early, but by 6pm many Australian flags were hanging in windows and on cars.

About 10.30pm, six carloads of young men of Middle Eastern appearance drove through the beachside strip.

They began kicking parked vehicles and hurling bottles and screaming for "Aussies" to stay inside.

This began a string of running skirmishes with police in which about 16 were arrested.

The confrontations then moved to Kings Way where a man was bashed and glass broken.

Police dogs and helicopters were called as furious locals began to gather, threatening to take back the streets from "wogs and Lebanese".
Rebecca Francis, 21, said the young men had intimidated her and her boyfriend. "They said to us, `Get inside, you Aussie c---s, if you don't want to get hurt."'

Police yelled at local residents to stay inside.

Police were yesterday investigating SMS messages calling on young Arabs to start another round of attacks at Cronulla Beach next Sunday.

"All Arabs unite as one, we will never back down to anyone the aussie's (sic) will feel the full force of the arabs as one `brothers in arms'," the SMS said.

"Unite now lets (sic) show them who's boss `destroy' everything gather at cronulla . . . spread the message to all Arabs."

At Lakemba last night, more than 400 Middle Eastern men, many with bats, bricks and iron bars, gathered at the mosque. Police tried for two hours to disperse them.
Later, as the crowd began leaving, a brick was thrown and flares were fired at people, police said.

In Maroubra, about 60 locals gathered near a hotel despite earlier peace talks between local surf group the Bra Boys and Lebanese community leaders. Police had reports that bricks were stockpiled on nearby shops' roofs and some metal bars were confiscated.

But the crowd had largely dispersed by nightfall.

The worsening violence was sparked on Sunday when a 5000-strong alcohol-fuelled mob, some waving flags and chanting racist slogans, chased and beat people of Middle Eastern appearance at Cronulla beach.

Later in the night, a wave of violence spread to Maroubra and Brighton-le-Sands, with two people stabbed and more than 100 cars badly damaged in apparent revenge attacks.

At least 30 people have been injured, including two ambulance officers and six police officers.

NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney condemned the violence as the worst he had seen in 40 years as a policeman.

"Never in my working life did I ever imagine a mob, a drunken mob, turning on a woman, an innocent woman who happened to stray into their path," Mr Moroney said.In other developments:

A POLICE strike force was set up to hunt down those responsible.

A TOTAL of 16 people had been charged with 42 offences as of last night.

WHITE supremacists were blamed for inciting the riot.

PRIME Minister John Howard said the violence was sickening, but he did not believe Australia was a racist nation.

Police were checking hospitals for a man with possible burns to his legs after a flag was torn from an RSL club and burned.

A witness said the man spat, stomped and urinated on the flag before dousing it with lighter fluid and setting it on fire. Two police officers said they saved two young men from being murdered on Sunday afternoon.

Sgt Craig Campbell said he had no doubt two young men cowering in a train at Cronulla railway station would have been killed if he had not held off the mob with his baton.

Sen-Constable Gary Smith said another two Middle Eastern youths thanked him for saving their lives. "The crowd surrounded one. I felt he was in grave danger," he said.

"Once I got him in the police car he thanked me for saving his life."
An attack on two Cronulla lifeguards last week, blamed on Lebanese youths, sparked the chaos.

Cronulla locals yesterday criticised a "softly-softly" approach by police.

Two bottle shops were asked to close about 5pm on Sunday after the violence had already peaked. Youths wandered drunk with bottles of beer in alcohol-free zones with no police action. A full-time police riot squad will be operational in January, but critics say it will be too late.

Suburban gangs come out to fight

    By Greg Ansley

CANBERRA - The violence that erupted at Sydney beaches was the bomb at the end of a long, slow-burning social fuse.

The entrenched tribalism of the city's coastal suburbs, the trigger for similar brawls between surfies and rockers in the 1960s, and regular confrontations between locals and "westies" from Sydney's inland fringes, was overlaid by the inevitable pressures of a new, diverse, Australia.

To this was added the tensions and fears that have followed the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and the Bali bombings, heightened by revelations of homegrown terrorist cells and Australia's growing sense of vulnerability.

It was exploited by troublemakers on both sides, fuelled by alcohol and thugs who regard brawling as entertainment, evidenced by internet notices urging a mass roll-up for the weekend's riots and the flood of hooligans to Cronulla and other southern beaches from other parts of the city.

Once calm is restored Sydney will sit down to an intensive dissection of the causes. The rest of the nation will watch with deep interest: Similar tinderboxes exist throughout a nation in which 6 million migrants have settled since the Second World War.

Last week, Adelaide police arrested six youths after gangs of white Australians and others of Middle Eastern origin took to each other with baseball bats and machetes outside a suburban high school.

The tensions exist on both sides, at almost every level. In Sydney, a white Australian teenager was forced to change schools after bullying, bashing and taunts of "whitey" by his mainly Middle Eastern classmates. In western Sydney pubs, local whites liquor up on Friday night before going out for a bit of "Leb (Lebanese) bashing".

On the street, young ethnic males complain they are unfairly targeted by police, and subjected to racial abuse when they are stopped. At a policy level Muslims, especially, complain that new anti-terror laws will inevitably target - and isolate - their communities.

All these elements have come together to pump the anger of young Lebanese in Sydney, most of whom live in the western areas of Canterbury, Bankstown and Parramatta.

Most move in easily identifiable groups, including the gangs that have smeared the standing of their communities.

A study by Sydney's University of Technology reported that after Aborigines and Muslims, Lebanese were the third-largest racial group complaining of vilification to the New South Wales Anti-Discrimination Board.

Antagonism has grown since the rise of Islamic terrorism, with young Lebanese men returning violence for violence, exacting often random revenge for insults, bashings and the ripping of traditional Muslim clothing from women.

The worst among them have gone far beyond this, committing crimes that have hardened intolerance, ranging from drug turf wars to an attack on the Lakemba police station using semi-automatic rifles. One of the men involved in that shooting later turned to radical Islam and is now in a Lebanese jail.

Worse still was the series of four gang rapes by Lebanese youths that horrified Sydney several years ago. One of the ringleaders sent text messages urging mates to "bash a Christian or Catholic" when they felt down. Others racially abused their white victims, calling one an "Aussie pig".

Over the past few years, Cronulla locals have told reporters gangs of young Lebanese men have taken their aggression to the beaches of Sutherland Shire, on Sydney's southeastern fringe.

Talkback radio, TV news programmes and newspapers have been packed with complaints of "Lebs" posturing in the sand, abusing and at times attacking locals and beachgoers, and frightening people away.

Lebanese community spokesmen retort that their people - most of who are naturalised Australians or, increasingly, Australian-born - have every right to be at the beach but have regularly themselves been the victims of abuse and threats.

Inevitably, it all flew to pieces last week when a Lebanese gang beat up young lifesavers.

"I think any gang, regardless of its ethnic background, is about a sense of belonging, because they don't feel they belong anywhere, so they need to claim some sort of power in their eyes," Father Geoffrey Abdallah, the director of the Maronite Lebanese Youth Organisation, told ABC radio.

    A matter of race

    * Australia, one of the world's most ethnically diverse nations, has levels of underlying racism.

    * Repeated surveys have shown discrimination against non-European migrants in housing, work and sport, where young ethnic players complain of being passed over in favour of equally matched whites. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission noted that racially discriminatory practices were "widespread, institutional in nature and practised at all levels of society".

    * Researchers say the causes include colonial cultural hangovers that tend to regard Australians of non-British origins as "others" to be suspected or feared, and a growing sense of fear and isolation sparked by a globalised economy and large migrant flows.

On the history of Middle Eastern mob violence in Sydney (written by a retired detective):
"slavic" languages are absolutely arteficial (Read "slawenlegende"). The "glagolica", invented by a bunch of monks, is nothing but an ancient esperanto, creating new words, definitions and alphabet out of regional slangs.

The craddle of European Civilization comes from the North. All blond people originate from the north. So if you see a blond-blue eyed Slovene, Russian, Czech, Polak ect., you can be 100% sure that his ancient ancestors originated from "Germanics" (Germanic = Nordic).
"slovenja" was the settelment of the Langobards = Germanics/Teutons. "Poland" of the Goths and East-Vandals ect. ect. What do "slavs" tell us about their origin?
Some silly story that they originate from some swamps in the east and popped out of no where into history.

So you see my dear "Gorostan" [=Triglav], you are in reality a "Germanic" indoctrinated with panslav propaganda and historic fantasy stories. ~Dr. Brandt, former TNP and Skadi member

    Long-term tensions behind Sydney riots

    By Kim Camberg
    In Sydney

Residents, police and politicians are all asking what has fuelled the violence which has swept Sydney's suburbs in the last few days.
Was it racism, revenge or simply alcohol-induced aggression?
The first outbreak of violence, on Sunday in Cronulla, had been a widely publicised event.

Everyone was drunk and anyone of Middle Eastern appearance got bashed. It went on all day into the night

    Wade Kereopa

It came a week to the day after two surf life savers had been assaulted in what was believed to be an unprovoked attack by a large group of men of Middle Eastern appearance.

The following week, texts started circulating around Sydney calling for a revenge fight.

By Sunday, the media and a crowd of about 5,000 had gathered in anticipation in Cronulla. Right wing pamphlets were seen circulating in the crowd.

Seventeen-year-old Wade Kereopa and his friend Kurt Sholes were at the beach.
"At about 12 o'clock everyone started gathering at Cronulla and then some guy yelled out 'There's Lebs on the next train!" so thousands of people went up to the station, but there was only about two on the train and about 50 people ran on and bashed them," said Kurt.

His friend Wade, who admits to have been drinking all afternoon, found himself on the train as well.

"I saw a crowd of people running to the train station. I went to have a look and ended up getting pushed onto the train by all the Aussies behind me. All these Aussies were smashing these Middle Eastern people. Then another guy of Middle Eastern origin got chased and beaten by the crowd. Everyone was drunk and anyone of Middle Eastern appearance got bashed. It went on all day into the night," he said.

Also on Sunday, a Caucasian man was stabbed after an altercation outside a golf club with "a group of males of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean appearance", according to police reports. Fifty car-loads of youths later smashed 100 vehicles with baseball bats and other weapons. Police received reports of firearms being "flashed" but not discharged.

The hostility escalated and spread across eight suburbs in Sydney's south and west. Sixteen people were arrested and charged with 41 offences.

On Monday, tensions were at an all time high. Reprisal attacks were carried out and police later made 11 more arrests during the second night of violence.

Car-loads of people were stopped and searched, there was violence at a mosque in the western suburb of Lakemba, assaults were carried out and a group of men armed with iron bars and guns were dispersed by police outside a convenience store in Cronulla.

Despite the fact that right-wing pamphlets have been circulated, the violence does not appear to have been co-ordinated from the wings by extremist groups, but to be the result of large groups of youths fuelled by mass hysteria.

It does, however, come against the backdrop of long-term racial tensions in Cronulla - a predominantly white community with a beach easily accessible on the train from Sydney's western suburbs, which are home to a large Muslim population.

[The violence is] not going to stop one day. It's going to keep going, which is what it's been doing since my father's time

    Jason Lalor, Cronulla

Jason Lalor lives minutes from the beach and is pessimistic that there is a quick fix to the deeply rooted antagonism on both sides.

He says he has been harassed by groups of Lebanese youths on more than one occasion and says he is tired of being hassled in his own neighbourhood.
"It's not going to stop one day. It's going to keep going, which is what it's been doing since my father's time."

The Australian Arabic Council (AAC) agrees that tensions have been building.
"These events typify an ugly and fringe element of Australian society," said AAC chairman Roland Jabbour.

"Arab Australians have had to cope with vilification, racism, abuse and fear of a racial backlash for a number of years, but these riots will take that fear to a new level," he said.

On Tuesday morning the New South Wales premier announced he was recalling parliament to push through tough new police powers to allow them to tackle the unrest.

In addition to having new powers of arrest, police will also be allowed to close down pubs and off licenses to prevent inebriated crowds accessing more alcohol.

There are new fears that the violence could spread nationally, with a high volume of mobile phone text messages inciting racial hatred. One reads: " We'll show them! It's on again sunday... send this to everyone in your phone book... this is a straight up WAR! We must continue to come together to help the innocet an family's so every one can enjoy our beach's!" The country is watching and waiting to see what happens next.

    Mobs spread in Australia

White youths attack family in Perth, taxi driver in Adelaide.

    Published Tuesday, December 13, 2005

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - The racial unrest that broke out in Sydney’s beachside suburbs over the weekend has spread to two other large Australian cities, where people of Middle Eastern descent were assaulted by whites, police said today.

Yesterday, police said they discovered weapons including fire bombs and rocks on the roofs of some houses in the beachside suburb of Maroubra. Some of those arrested were armed with machetes and baseball bats.
Elsewhere, Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio reported today that a family of Middle Eastern origin was attacked in the western city of Perth by a group of 11 white men who threw eggs, shouted abuse and kicked their garage door. The 42-year-old father, who did not want to be identified, said his family was badly shaken by last night’s incident. "I don’t know if we were mistakenly identified," he said. "What I definitely know is it was something linked to the escalation in New South Wales."

Perth police Superintendent Shayne Maines said authorities could not rule out a link between the attack and the racial violence in Sydney.

In Adelaide, a taxi driver of Lebanese origin, Hossein Kazemi, was injured when he was punched by a passenger during an incident today.
More violence seemed likely. New text messages circulated yesterday, one of which called for more fighting next weekend: "We’ll show them! It’s on again Sunday."
