    Vrttin

Vrttin are Finlands internationally acclaimed contemporary folk music phenomenon. Formed in 1983 as a small girls group singing and playing kanteles, then rapidly expanding to a twenty-one-piece group before streamlining down to a ten-piece in 1990 and finally now a dynamic ninepiece, this exciting and groundbreaking ensemble, fronted by three dazzling female singers has produced ten albums, six of which topped World Music charts in Europe, America and Japan and one of which was certified Platinum.

Their distinctive and innovative style which draws on Karelian and Finno-Ugric runo and harmony traditions, has blown away audiences worldwide with tours in Japan, Australia, North and South America and all over Europe.

    Listen to some sound samples:

    - Tuulen Tunto
    - Nahkaruoska
    - Viikon vaivane
    - Seelinnikoi
    - ij
    - Kivutar

Very good band indeed. Almost as good as Hedningarna.

Hehe, I take it this superlative-laden prose was produced by some American marketer?

But yes, they are a great band -- I don't really listen to their records but I've seen them live twice. Very refreshing change from musical acts whose objective seems to simply be to reproduce on stage the exact same thing they do on their records.

Btw when listening to them you should remember that their music and general style are very exclusively Karelian -- that is, the region in south-eastern Finland. Other parts of Finland have very different musical traditions.

If you are interested, also check out Vrttin's frontwoman Sari Kaasinen's solo projects.

Hedningarna have produced an album that explores the same musical traditions that Vrttin operate in, Karelia visa. However it is a much more "academic" effort, if you understand what I mean. Definitely worth listening to though.

That's interesting. What about other parts? Any musicians?

Yeah, I know, I'm the lucky owner of all Hedningarna albums. Actually, Karelia Visa is the best Hedningarna album, in my opinion.
