wow, i didnt know there were so many musicians at tNP. i have been playing drums for about five year's, guitar for three and a half, and bass goes with that. i have made better than decent progress on the guitar, atleast in comparison with any neighboring musician's. i am currently struggling with sweep picking and that sort of shredding whatnot...oh, i can growl/scream rather well, and have taken a few vocal lesson's. my range is small, and my voice still surprisingly weak, but i can atleast sing accompaniment vocal's.

i was in a death/thrash band for about a year, doing vocals and guitar's, but we all lost interest. currently, me and a skinhead buddy are starting an oi/hatecore band, with me on drum's, and i just recently bought a four track recorder to record my own 'solo' project. i am aiming for a cohesive mix of classical guitar, progressive rock, and metal of all sort's.

I've been trying to play drums for the past couple of years but, quite embarassingly, I have absolutely no rythm and find drumming to be the most frustrating and vexing musical pursuit I've ever attempted. I can play several other instruments good enough to get by with, but the guitar has been the only thing that I've ever given my full attention and dedication to.

I wish that I could say that I was in a band, but frankly I just don't know anyone who is into the style of playing that I am... the only one that I know who can keep up with me is my dad, and I'd feel really if I were in a band with my father. I mostly play in the style of (old) Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, etc. with a heavy draw on Paganini for inspiration - that neoclassical/metal/shredding type of thing...

I've just never been content with strumming boring chords or the simplicity of a lot of different musical types. My curse is the pursuit for technical perfection and honestly, as much as I love playing guitar, I hate it because I've never had fun doing it... I'm just constantly obsessed with pushing myelf to always be faster and better and... I don't know what else. Maybe when I figure out just what I'm wanting from my music, I will learn to enjoy it a little and give myself a break from all the self-imposed pressure.
wow! i love that sort of music, though i am nowhere near good enough to play it. :frown:

lol, i have played music alongside my father, as well

Right now I have a guitar, bass, and banjo that I pick up and play around with. Xmas time is fun because I have a lot of carols that I sing and play. I have played the drums and trumpet in the past as well.

I think you're right. I was subjected to it too. It's relatively easy and cheap and therefore popular to use in order to determine whether the child has any interest in or potential for being a musician.

I used to play tenor sax and play some bass too but have been a bit slack of late.

It's not that surprising if one considers that most of us here are youngish, probably from reasonably affluent backgrounds and reasonably intelligent and well educated. The moderators took care of most of the mentally challenged members, lol. :noose2:

I play the piano, and have played it since I was a wee lad: although I neglected it for a bit, I have now started avidly again. I am learning a massive sonata by Haydn now, and touching a bit up on Bach's First Invention.

Of course, the aim is eventually the Hammerklavier!

But seriously, the next piece I will be learning is Daquin's Cuckoo. :

I've never written any music of my own, though.

When I was a child I learnt violin, piano and recorder. But, well, I packed in one after another with the years, beginning with the most difficult and straining, the violin (:nopity00, and ending with the easiest, the recorder. Nothing with Wunderkind. :food-smil

I play Electric and acoustic guitar, Bass(5-string) and Sing(mainly grim vocals). I can hold my "shriek" in about 40 seconds, and that's quite the accomplishment thinking about the fact I'm a smoker :p
