    Is World Peace Possible?

    A cabled reply to an American poll

    First published in Cosmopolitan, January, 1936.


    The question whether world peace will ever be possible can only be answered by someone familiar with world history. To be familiar with world history means, however, to know human beings as they have been and always will be. There is a vast difference, which most people will never comprehend, between viewing future history as it will be and viewing it as one might like it to be. Peace is a desire, war is a fact; and history has never paid heed to human desires and ideals.

    Life is a struggle involving plants, animals, and humans. It is a struggle between individuals, social classes, peoples, and nations, and it can take the form of economic, social, political, and military competition. It is a struggle for the power to make one’s will prevail, to exploit one’s advantage, or to advance one’s opinion of what is just or expedient. When other means fail, recourse will be taken time and again to the ultimate means: violence. An individual who uses violence can be branded a criminal, a class can be called revolutionary or traitorous, a people bloodthirsty. But that does not alter the facts. Modern world-communism calls its wars "uprisings," imperialist nations describe theirs as "pacification of foreign peoples." And if the world existed as a unified state, wars would likewise be referred to as "uprisings." The distinctions here are purely verbal.

    Talk of world peace is heard today only among the white peoples, and not among the much more numerous colored races. This is a perilous state of affairs. When individual thinkers and idealists talk of peace, as they have done since time immemorial, the effect is always negligible. But when whole peoples become pacifistic it is a symptom of senility. Strong and unspent races are not pacifistic. To adopt such a position is to abandon the future, for the pacifist ideal is a static, terminal condition that is contrary to the basic facts of existence.

    As long as man continues to evolve there will be wars. Should the white peoples ever become so tired of war that their governments can no longer incite them to wage it, the earth will inevitably fall a victim to the colored men, just as the Roman Empire succumbed to the Teutons. Pacifism means yielding power to the inveterate nonpacifists. Among the latter there will always be white men -- adventurers, conquerors, leader-types -- whose following increases with every success. If a revolt against the whites were to occur today in Asia, countless whites would join the rebels simply because they are tired of peaceful living.

    Pacifism will remain an ideal, war a fact. If the white races are resolved never to wage war again, the colored will act differently and be rulers of the world.
    It came even worse than Spengler could imagine--Europe is not contested by the coloured races in an armageddon, but the European peoples are infiltrated, dissolved and destroyed through "peaceful" mass immigration of foreign races ...

    Ah yes, good ole Spengler.

    There is a Nordic world-feeling, reaching from England to Japan, which is full of joy just because of the burden of human destiny. One challenges it for the sake of conquering it, and one goes under proudly should it prove stronger than one's own will. This was the attribute depicted in the old, genuine parts of the Mahabharata which tell of the fight between the Kurus and Pandus; in Homer, Pindar, and Aeschylus; in the Germanic sagas and in Shakespeare; in certain songs of the Chinese Shu king, and in the world of the Samurai. It is the tragic view of life, which is not yet dead, but will blossom anew in the future just as it blossomed in the World War. All the very great poets of the Nordic Cultures have been tragedians, and tragedy, from ballad and epic onward, has been the deepest form of this brave pessimism.

    "slavic" languages are absolutely arteficial (Read "slawenlegende"). The "glagolica", invented by a bunch of monks, is nothing but an ancient esperanto, creating new words, definitions and alphabet out of regional slangs.

    The craddle of European Civilization comes from the North. All blond people originate from the north. So if you see a blond-blue eyed Slovene, Russian, Czech, Polak ect., you can be 100% sure that his ancient ancestors originated from "Germanics" (Germanic = Nordic).
    "slovenja" was the settelment of the Langobards = Germanics/Teutons. "Poland" of the Goths and East-Vandals ect. ect. What do "slavs" tell us about their origin?
    Some silly story that they originate from some swamps in the east and popped out of no where into history.

    "Nordic" is here not an anthropological term, but refers to a similar "world-feeling", as he says, of different peoples/cultures/spirits located northerly (in Eurasia).

    By the way, such corresponds to the observation that the northern Types in East Asia are, within in the frame and direction of their racial conditions, more dynamic and progressively developed than the types in southern east Asia, and play a bio-dynamic role there not unsimilar to that of the Nordics in the western Eurasian sphere. (Your prompt, Agrippa. )

    One anyway has to be careful with these terms at Spengler. While "race" in his early writings refers to the core of "active" and spiritual bearers of a nation or culture--is thus rather a "spirit race"--, he comes in some of his later writings closer to the racial concept of anthropology understanding it as biological entity, and in Der Mensch und die Technik he comes close to "Nordicist" ideas.

    In his literary remains, "race" also is grasped in a not constantly consistent meanings sometimes rather from this, sometimes rather from that side.

    (Of course it isn't so as if there was no connection between biological race and the core elements and basis of spirit and culture.)

    Its obvious that BOTH culturally and racially the temperate zones, but also the dry zones are more favourable for further human developments than the humid tropical zones, especially the tropical forests. This was true almost from the beginning of our genus Homo, in fact, in the humid tropical forests (too stable and one sided tendencies), humans would have never came up, they needed the dry open land and its opportunities and challenges.

    Though I'm not a fan of Spengler, this quote from The Decline of the West is very useful in helping to understand the creation of national and folk consciousness:

    The attempt of Alexander the Great to fuse Greeks and Persians together was a complete failure, and we have recently had experience in the real strength of Anglo-German community of feeling. But "people" is a linkage of which one is conscious. In ordinary usage, one designates as one's "people" -- and with feeling -- that community, out of the many to which one belongs, which inwardly stands nearest to one. And then he extends this concept, which is really quite particular and derived from personal experience, to collectivities of the most varied kinds. For Caesar the Arverni were a "civitas"; for us the Chinese are a "nation." On this basis, it was the Athenians and not the Greeks who constituted a nation, and in fact there were only a few individuals who, like Isocrates, felt themselves primarily as Hellenes. On this basis, one of two brothers may call himself a Swiss and the other, with equal right, a German. These are not philosophical concepts, but historical facts. A people is an aggregate of men which feels itself a unit. The Spartiates felt themselves a people in this sense; the "Dorians" of 1100, too, probably, but those of 400 certainly not. The Crusaders became genuinely a people in taking the oath of Clermont; the Mormons in their expulsion from Missouri, in 1839; the Mamertines by their need of winning for themselves a stronghold of refuge. Was the formative principle very different with the Jacobins and Hyksos? How many peoples may have originated in a chief's following or a band of fugitives? Such a group can change race, like the Osmanli, who appeared in Asia Minor as Mongols; or language, like the Sicilian Normans; or name, like Achaeans and Danaoi. So long as the common feeling is there, the people as such is there.
