    Post Does God Exist?

I don't mean the traditional Judeo-Christian God, but God in general.

If so, why? If not, why not?

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4)

    Post Re: Does God exist?

I don't believe that there is a God at all. It's hard to give a reason why or why not, as it's impossible to offer evidence for or against. I just choose not to believe because I don't see the point in it. I don't need something to pray to. Religion in any form does nothing for me.

I can't understand the need for people to believe there is something above them, or to need to have "faith" that this being will pull them through hard times, give them an afterlife, stop them from getting cancer, etc. To me believing in a higher power seems almost like a weakness.

If I had proof that a god existed I wouldn't worship him/her/it/they anyway.
I envision a world where people dawning long white robes and elaborate headdresses run rampant down the streets, waving their arms in the air while screaming "we've gone mad, we've gone mad", like defrocked monks breaking the silence of ages past.

    I agree.

I thinks it ridiculous that some would pray to a god to assuage their tax problems when this same "God" has watched millions of humans being put to butcher without even feigning interest.

Albeit, there certainly is a higher power (simply look to the sky - one has to admit that something had to have started it all, regardless of whether or not you are religious or subscribe to the Big Bang theory...), but to think that "God" passes judgement over every single individual on Earth is nonsense. Things are they way they are because It let the chips fall as they did.

The very first and the very last act of divine intervention occurred 13.7 billion years ago.

    Post Re: Does God exist?

God is a concept forced on humanity since time immemorial. Worshipping god in the way it's done today is a form of collective expression of weakness.

It's impossible, or almost impossible to discuss such metaphysics, because by definition, god is above logic, so it's impossible to apply logic to explain his existence.
It's impossible to apply our moral or other codes on god, because those are things we have created by ourselves, and we all understand them in different ways.

It's almost impossible to discuss about god, because we're all imprinted with at least some ideas on how it all 'should be'.

Finally, a discussion about god can't seem to go without someone quoting and misquoting the allegedly 'holy' scriptures and other institutionalized religious rules and quotes.

So you don't believe in the Bible Code as a means of predicting the future?

    Hehe

Actually, I know a guy who is from a very rich family. They're very religious too.
One day, he asked me why I don't go to church. He was apalled to find out that I don't believe in god, he even confessed to me that every time he wants something, he prays very hard to God, and he always gets it.

He told me that's how he got the BMW, by faith!

I reminded him that his daddy bought that BMW, and sometimes he gives the keys to him.

He replied: "You're obviously missing the point!".

    Post Re: Does God exist?

I thought this was a great idea for a thread ... seems like it's dying in its tracks.

It is possible to discuss the existence of God without referring to scriptures. Philosophers do it all the time.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4)

I am God. So, yes he does exist. There's my modest shining through.

I do not believe in god but raised a Catholic, but I only changed my thoughts recently. I did do a report in my German class in high school and we were allowed to do any German but not any Nazis, but in a later report I did I was allowed to because we had to pick a city and two germans from the city. I know Himmler and I had to chose a site which was BMW. Back to the subject now though I did a report on Nietzsche and he was very influential in making my decisions later that there possibly is no god or higher power rather. I always think to myself there is a process of creation but not a god that can help you.

No, no... on the contrary. I think this is an excellent thread, and has already had some good responses. Thanks for the opportunity, Laedifox!

"Does God exist?" - I very much doubt it.

"God" or the supernatural has been in the minds of humans since they branched off from other primates on the evolutionary ladder. Homo sapiens developed religion, or rather, evolution developed a religious "culture" in the human psyche, in an attempt to explain the unexplained. Early tribal humans, who commenced implementing their superior intellectual skills (compared to other animals), began asking questions such as "why are we here?" and "what is the purpose of life?", and thus developed the idea of the supernatural to explain the unexplained.

In modern life, science has answered many of our questions already. More remain to be answered, but considering our progress, they probably will be answered too, and through meticulous reasoning and scientific verification. We don't need God anymore to explain life for us.
