    Post People from Saransk, Mordovia

    Pictures are selected fro clarity

    http://www.cyberleague.ru/Albums/LanParty3/image012.jpg

General impression seems to be ~65% Nordeuropoid type, ~20% Mediterranoid type, ~15% Uraloid type. To be honest, I saw more about 5 times more distinct Nordic types in those pictures than I do where I live on any given day...

Strong Nordid influence but also Alpine and Osteuropid types are strongly represented, Meds not so strong. Typical Lappoid Osteuropids are not on the pics at the first look.
The Nordid type looks like coming from the East, Eastern Europe?

Mordovia is right before the Urals as far as I remember, so it is in Eastern Europe. There are lots of ethnic Russians living there as well.

Oh my god! Ok, I didnt read the title of the post...

Well if Mordovia is Mordwinien, the Mordwiner are a Finnish tribes in Russia.

Interesting that the Finnish-Osteuropid/Lappid element is so weakly represented.
But maybe the most pictured are Russians of course...

I've seen lots of ethnic Mordvins, there are a lot of Nordics amongst them. Anyway, if it is Saransk ethnic Russians must be in minority.

You are correct (to a certain extent). I wouldn't go as far as to say that the difference in Nordoid phenotypes between Russian males and females is of tenfold magnitude, but Russian females are darker and more brachycephalic than Russian males. Furthermore, they seem to have been more influenced by Uralic admixture - for example, Russian females have three times more epicanthic eyefolds than Russian males. I believe that this is due to the fact that as Slavic settlers expanded eastward throughout Russia, most of the colonists, who were male, took Finno-Ugric wives. Indeed, in certain regions (Perm, for example) this process is well documented.

I never liked the term "Mordvin." It includes two culturally and anthropologically distinct tribes; Mordva Erzya and Mordva Moksha. Mordva Erzya are predominantly West Baltic/East Nordid (I assume that in Lundman's taxonomy this type is referred to as the 'Aistin'). They are tall, robust, mesocephalic, very light eyed, and rather blond. Anthropologically, they are more simmilar to neighboring Russians, as well as Northwest Russians and Estonians than they are to the Mordva Moksha. They are part of the Illmen-Dniepr anthropological complex. Mordva Moksha, on the other hand, are predominantly Pontic and Sub-Uralic. They are more simmilar to Maris and Chuvashis than they are to the Erzya. Russians have been living in Mordovia since the 14th century, and have composed the numerical majority of the republic's inhabitants for more than a century; anthropologically, they are close to their Erzya neighbors, but show less Uraloid admixture than either Erzya or Moksha.

The Erzya are a very interesting group from any perspective. Their language, though Finnic, has more features in common with the Baltic languages than even the Balto-Finnish languages, such as Estonian and Karelian. In fact, Karin Julisovna Mark has suggested that the Mordva Erzya are the descendants of the Baltic-speaking tribes brought their Indo-European idiom into the Baltic area. Physical anthropology seems to bear this conclusion out; the Erzya belong to the same type as the carriers of the Fatjanovo/Boat-Axe culture who Indo-Europeanized the Eastern Baltic area during the Neolithic.

yes interesting, some time ago i was browsing russian dating sites to get an
idea of persentage of different phenotype (when I was living in russia long time ago i did not pay much attention to it)and seen quite a few men who would pass for swedish swede but very few women who would pass for swedish swede. But my tentatively explanation was initially that corded women must be more popular and was this reason seldom put pics on dating sites.
