Post Re: AW: What do you do for a living?

I work on the gardening and grounds crew of a college as well as doing my own work in the same field on the side for wealthy clients. I also have a small personal business drawing maps for magazines and books. It's a diverse income.

My gal and I also have extensive vegetable gardens and a small orchard from which we eat--and this is basically a full-time job in and of itself.

I got into the field at 16, a few days after quitting high school. Mostly we concentrate on Floors, Stairs, and various other aspects of carpentry, all being manual labour of course . At 19 my brother and I started up our own business. Our whole workload is concentrated on private residential work, and even though we can hire people to do most of the work for us (and often do) we still do actual 'physical labour' on a daily basis.

It's tough work, after almost eight years of doing this, I am really starting to feel the effects (back, knees).

There are of course positives and negatives to every job, and this one is no exception. My biggest motivation for going to work every morning is that I can make more money than most University grads. The hours are always flexible, and I don't need to ask for permission when I want a day off or take a vacation. Most importantly, on a hot day like today I can always pop open a cold beer and not worry about a 'boss' giving me shit, believe me when I tell you, this is priceless . This of course doesn't necessarily mean that I'm getting rich, but it sure beats working in a warehouse, driving a truck, or working at a fast food restaurant.

A grade 10 education doesn't give you many options.

I work in a technical field, but I am seeking a career shift to finance or accounting. I make 20% less working for a different company today than I did in the late 90's, very depressing. I've thought about taking some additional accounting classes and studying to take the CPA as accounting and finance are disciplines they don't seem quite so eager to ship overseas yet.

I've just finished my first year at university, studying music. In between stacking shelves for loose change, which is the job i've had for the last 2½ years
