    Your Thoughts on America

Please share your thoughts on America. I am especially interested in the claim that there is no such thing as an American ethnos or an American culture.
    The Phora

"There are no principles; there are only events. There is no good and bad, there are only circumstances. The superior man espouses events and circumstances in order to guide them. If there were principles and fixed laws, nations would not change them as we change our shirts and a man can not be expected to be wiser than an entire nation."

Well, sticking my neck out, there are a huge number of unique American cultural accomplishments that the rest of the world would be lost without. Baseball for example, hip hop, break dancing and quilting maybe. and um....

Well why don't you lead us off, I'm sure there are many, many more that don't immediately leap to mind

Sorry I forgot the big one - barbecue!

    American Cultural History
    >>"In 1800, everyday life had changed little since the year 1000. Yet, by 1900 the Industrial Revolution had transformed the world's economy. The United States was still new and making its way to becoming a world power. Watch it happen as you browse your way through each decade. Then visit the suggested links for more information. Because we are librarians, we must point out that the best way to immerse oneself in a topic is to use both Internet and library books. Nothing like getting your hands on books!"<<

Comte de Buffon, renowned French scientist (1749): The American “heart is frozen, their society cold, their empire cruel.”
Talleyrand, French politician (1790s): It is a country of “32 religions and only one dish … and even that [is] inedible.”
Alexis de Tocqueville, French social philosopher (1835): “I know of no country in which there is so little independence of mind and real freedom of discussion.”
Sigmund Freud, Austrian psychiatrist (1930s): “America is a mistake, a gigantic mistake.”
George Bernard Shaw, British playwright (1933): “An asylum for the sane would be empty in America.”
Henry Miller, American novelist (1945): America is “a fruit which rotted before it had a chance to ripen.”
Harold Pinter, British playwright (2001): The United States is “the most dangerous power the world has ever known.”

Have you read Tallyrand's criticisms of America? If so, what are your impressions of them?
I really do not see any enormous cultural achievement in America - it makes some interesting movies, but I would place that more under pop culture The food is terrible - mostly just salt, sugar and fat. The culture of the country seems based mostly on monetary success, christianity and sports. While I find money interesting, american sports to me are a complete bore - not to mention why are these imbeciles given enormous social status for throwing a ball around - baffling. Behaviour is rather primitive - I really prefer a fairly hierarchal system - some person of low social status which I know for 5 minutes is already addressing me by familiar. On the other hand Americans tend to be fairly hard working, very friendly, helpful and possessing quite a high technical ability - for the most part are quite easy to got along with. In summary the ethos in America is relatively high (otherwise it would be incapable of being at the level it is presently), though culturally it is very rough and unsophisticated.

When I'm thinking of America, five things appear in my thoughts.

    1. Hollywood - money
    2. World Trade Center and the Wall Street - Money
    3. Ramstein - We're all living in America - critics on the american way.
    4. Astrophysics - Exploring the Universe.
    5. Civil War

That's what appears in my brain.

    2, wealthy
    3, with out history
    4, dirty (places)/dirty (corruption)
    5, very large

LOL! Good ol' Shaw! I didn't know that quote!
Do you happen to have all of Shaws quotes on America?

I also like "The 100% American is an 99% Idiot".

In ethnic sense, N-America is the least homogeneous country of the Western world in my mind.

    Americans:
Fat, lazy, arrogant, monolingual and greedy.

America: Money, corruption, violence, crime and no culture worth mentioning.

America is close to collapsing, in my mind, for example, the Chinese hold about two billion American dollars. All they need to do is change that into Euros and then the American economy is f**ked.
