Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Hunters in the Snow (Winter) (1565)

Bruegel is so much fun. You feel like an alien getting a first look at what human life is like, with warts and all. And with all the happiness and silliness as well.

This painting I think shows off winter at its best: the chill of the air and the warmth of a fire, the beautiful black silhouettes of prickly trees against a white landscape, the enjoyment of winter games (they're playing hockey on the lake!), some women playing with a sled on the ice (?), and friendly, cozy houses looking sleepy under the thick snow.

Also, check out the composition. It turns like a crescent from the hunters on the lower right, across the lake, through the village and out beyond the horizon on the upper right, adding a feeling of eternity to the homely scenery.

So, society and nature in unison. I really love this.

Anders Zorn - Reading (La lecture) (1893)

    Zoom in

Zorn is famous for folksy paintings, but I wanted to show you this etching as a clearer example of how good he was with creating a feeling of presence with very minimal means.

If you zoom in on the picture (at Google Arts & Culture), this is just a jumble of chaotic lines on paper, but at the right distance you feel like you're sitting right beside these people, like they are alive, talking and breathing.

Zorn was a fairly popular international artist in his day, but seems to have been largely forgotten outside his home country.

John Constable - Wivenhoe Park, Essex (1816)

    Zoom in

Great poet William Blake said something to the effect that John Constable's paintings aren't art, they're pure inspiration.

And who's to say Blake was wrong? Constable seems like a fellow whose eye could absorb more of his surroundings than any normal person could, so he painted these landscapes that seemed to be larger than is physically possible. They're brimming with life, as though God is everywhere.
