Volk and Rasse, those paintings by Albert Anker are extraordinary. They look so much like photographs but there's a tenderness and softness to them. That picture of a girl laying down with bricks on the floor is one of my favourites.
(It doesn't matter how old the song is, I won't stop liking it).

Our beauty is our power, our strength. We can’t allow them to change us, to lessen us. I will never grant them that satisfaction, and neither should you!

Two by Edward Reginald Frampton (1872-1923):

    Brittany: 1914, c. 1920

Frampton’s painting depicts a young soldier and his companion kneeling to pray at a wayside shrine before he goes off to war. He wears the uniform of a private in the French infantry. The background of the picture depicts a section of the Breton coastal landscape at Camaret-sur-Mer where the artist had spent some time in 1911.

    Pierneef

Jacobus Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef (usually referred to as Pierneef) (13 August 1886 Pretoria – 4 October 1957 Pretoria),[1] was a South African landscape artist, generally considered to be one of the best of the old South African masters. His distinctive style is widely recognised and his work was greatly influenced by the South African landscape.

Most of his landscapes were of the South African highveld, which provided a lifelong source of inspiration for him. Pierneef's style was to reduce and simplify the landscape to geometric structures, using flat planes, lines and colour to present the harmony and order in nature. This resulted in formalised, ordered and often-monumental view of the South African landscape, uninhabited and with dramatic light and colour.

Pierneef's work can be seen worldwide in many private, corporate and public collections, including the Africana Museum, Durban Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, King George VI Art Gallery, Pierneef Museum and the Pretoria Art Gallery.
Here is a comprehensive page on Pierneef http://www.missmoss.co.za/2011/02/15/pierneef/

Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".
