Yes I know, I'm not a woman, but let me say that I considered my son as an autonomous individual being and even a person in his own right when I first saw him, i.e. in the moment of his birth! - and I really mean it; so I do find your example disturbing!

But I also know that some women/mothers have a very different attitude towards their children - if they admit it or not.

Seems quite natural to me. Of course, there's a question of degree, but to eliminate it entirely would render the idea of family and kinship void, which wouldn't do anyone any good, would it?

I have only been blessed with one child yet and she is not quite three so this is still theoretical for me. I hope to see her as autonomous by the time she is twenty. I hope that she will listen to me beyond that point but I do not want to control her. If I have done my job right then her choices will be ones that I approve of.

My children wre asserting their personalities and independence from birth on. Every baby is a full individual in more of a raw state so to say. What they can be is already there, but will be shaped and refined over time.

Parents are not to control their children but rather act as a guide and help them learn their first life lessons. I have no desire to control my children, or anyone else for that matter.
