The Kalash people, a last Aryan tribe or a Greek descent folk in the heart of Asia

Surrounded by the mountains of the Hindu Kush live a small group of people (about 3,000) called the Kafir Kalash. They have their own language, religion and dress. Their religion has little in common with Islam and it is thought that it may have roots in early Vedic religion. Theories abound as to how the Kalash came to inhabit their beautiful valleys. Some say they are the descendants of tribes who intermarried with followers of Alexander the Great. As in other parts of the Hindu Kush the Kailash are fair in complexion and rosy cheeked. Some are even blonde and blue eyed. The Kafir-Kalash or "Wearers of the Black Robes", are a primitive pagan tribe. Their ancestry is enveloped in mystery and is the subject of controversy. A legend says that five soldiers of the legions of Alexander of Macedonia settled in Chitral and are the progenitors of the Kafir-Kalash.

The Kalash women wear black gowns of coarse cloth in summer and hand-spun wool dyed in black in winter. Their picturesque headgear is made of woolen black material decked out with cowry shells, buttons and crowned with a large colored feather. The Kalash are fun loving people who love music and dancing particularly on occasion of their religious festival like Joshi Chilinjusht (14th & 15th May-spring), Phool (20th - 25th September) and Chomas (18th to 21st December for a week).

    The Kalash festivals

There is a misunderstanding of Kalash rituals and traditions. The Kalash people thank the Creator during their festivals. The festival is meant to give thanks to the almighty for blessing them. Their dancing is one way of showing happiness and thankfulness towards the Creator.

    JHOSHI
14th - 15th May This celebration is organized to pay thanks to the Almighty. They celebrate the arrival of the spring season with new hopes and aspirations.
    UCHAO
20th August Kalash people observe Uchao, the harvest celebration to pay homage to the Almighty that blessed them with fruits and other crops. They prepare cheese, buttermilk and corn to celebrate Uchao.
    CHOIMUS
7th - 22nd December Choimus is the function of giving thanks to the Creator for their bumper crop, fruit, animals and food stored for the winter. People sacrifice animals in the name of the Almighty; rejoice with all the blessings such as fruit, cheese and corn. They show their thanks by dancing and singing together, enjoying every moment.

The Kalash indigenous people call for:

The label of “KAFIR” (arabic term word meaning an unbeliever, a person who hides, denies, or covers the truth) upon the Kalash tribe must be removed. It is inhumane and unjust. The severe humiliation has placed an irreversible psychological impact upon the Kalash tribe. The Kalash must be respected in accordance to the Human Rights granted to all human beings.

The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) has built a huge hotel in the BumburateValley that disregards sacred sites and landmarks of the Kalash people. The PTDC hotel, located next door to the traditional menstrual house, is violating the privacy of Kalash women. The PTDC Hotel must be removed.

The Forest Corporation of Pakistan must return the remaining forests to the local people. They can well maintain their forests according to their ancestor’s traditions.

Restitutions and reparations must be paid for the damages done to the indigenous people’s natural resources in their territories.

Pastoral hills are the essential summer home (Ghaari) for the HinduKush dwellers and must be protected. It must not be called a national park.

Well, most pictures in the net have a poor resolution, but I remember to watch a tv program that mentioned the kalash and some people there just looked as true scandinavians with their long pigtailed blond hair and blue eyes.

Having passed through the Kalash valley on a trip from Gilgit to Rawalpindi via Chitral (the harder way), I can say that they Kalashi people are little more than objects in a zoo for the government of Pakistan.

It's a place where tourists (Pakistani and Western) are flown in, given guided tours of the "natives", allowed to consume large quantities of liquor and then flown out. Prostitution is also rampant there.

"Western" documentaries, much like those I have seen on the Hunza Valley (also familiar to me), are great gimick to get unwary western tourists to spend Big Bucks in Pakistan though.

My heart goes out to the Kalashi people.

I wonder if these people are ever harrased or even threatened by any surrounding Pakistani communities (if there are any) for their looks, beliefs, and customs.

Re: The Kalash people, a last aryan tribe or a greek descent folk in the heart of Asia

I shiver just to think that the kalashi people fate, its march into obliteration, could be the foresight of europeans and euro-descendants own destiny...

Unfortunately when I look at those faces and knowing the terrible situation that people is facing I cannot avoid to remember but this song:

    Ode To A Dying People

Eyes shining bright with unspilt tears,
Thinking about all these wasted years.
Everything worth living for is gone,
Brother, i find it hard to keep fighting on.
    Falling down towards the abyss,
    The reaper embraces me with his kiss;
It makes me want to refuse to care,
To watch this all unfold - too much to bear.

If this is the way it ends -
If this is the way my race ends . . .
If this is the way it ends - i can't bear to witness

Disease encroaching on all i hold dear,
Somehow i gotta get my soul outta here.
Heart of agony, faint burning hope,
I'm finding it hard to try to cope . . .

Because liars own the world with conquering poise,
    In a wasteland of meaningless noise;
We don't stand a chance with dormant pride,
The heroes of our race have already died . . .

If this is the way it ends - if this is the way my race ends. . .
If this is the way it ends - i can't bear to witness . . .

To imagine it has all come down to this,
    Apathy and suicidal bliss . . .

It's all over except for the cryin',
With a whimper instead of the roar of a lion . . .

The greatest race to ever walk the earth,
Dying a slow death with insane mirth,
The tomb has been prepared, our race betrayed,
White man, fight the flight towards the grave . . .

If this is the way it ends - if this is the way my race ends . . .
If this is the way it ends - i can't bear to witness . . .
If this is the way it ends - if this is the way my race ends . . .
If this is the way it ends - i can't bear to witness . . .

Don't let it end this way,
Don't let it end this way,
    Don't let it end this way, i can't bear to witness . . .

So far as I know the Kalash people even being a touristic attraction and a good financial income for the pakistani government, they face the hatred of the muslims due to their pagan religious rituals and are forced to convert themselves to islam. I know that a good european identitarian from France who moved in to Pakistan to join and help the kalash in their struggle for survival was killed by the muslims some years ago.
