I've just finished this, it's an excellent read, the first of a trilogy of books telling the life of Cicero. The story unfolds through the voice of Tiro his slave and the inventor of shorthand. Although it's a Roman setting, it's really all about politics and the events that take place within its pages echo politics today. At one point Pompey uses the Roman people's fear of pirates to obtain new powers that Harris uses as a clever nod towards today's war on terror.

A fab read!
