Smoking ban ‘will cost pubs £150m’

SCOTLAND'S pubs could lose more than £150m this year because of the smoking ban, licensed trade representatives said yesterday.
However, the trade was told that there will be no turning back regarding the ban.

The £150m figure is the estimated annual cash impact of an 11% drop in drink sales, according to the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, which represents around a third of pubs. Food sales in licensed premises have also dropped, by 3%.

The SLTA said 46% of pubs reported a fall in visits by regulars since the ban came into effect on March 26. Only 5% reported an increase.

However, Scotland's Health Minister Andy Kerr said: "I have not met a single person who wants to turn the clock back and reintroduce smoking in pubs. Indeed, feedback has been quite the opposite."

We have had it here in Ireland for a good while now and its plain to see the pubs are much much quiter than they used to be.I think food is what keeps bars going during the week days as people seem to rather drink at home now so they can smoke in comfort.A big draw back is that without smoke body odar is stronger so going into a nightclub can be very uncomfortable when you have so many people in one small place can make you feel very sick indeed.
