Bit if it's a distortion it may be as well French or Italian from Veneto
I did a random research with yahoo and all the Faisons look americans, quite strange...
"E tutti si scandalizzano quando sentono dire: quel tale tipo di mammifero o di uccello ormai è sparito dalla faccia della terra, non lo vedremo più; è una grave perdita. Certo, si tratta di gravissime perdite.

Seven pictures of northern European males and seven pictures of northern African males were presented randomly via a computer screen to 82 Italian female undergraduates of the University of Padua, Italy.
Each picture depicted a full frontal face with a neutral facial expression. Participants were asked to classify each picture as either northern Italian or southern Italian.
On average, the seven pictures depicting northern Europeans were classified as northern Italians 81% of the time. The seven pictures depicting northern Africans were classified as southern Italians 83%
of the time.
There is a black character actor named Frankie Faison, you may have seen him in the Silence of the Lambs films as one of the orderlies who looks after Hannibal Lecter. He also played in some bizarre film where his character dressed in a black SS uniform and was known as "the black Führer of Harlem."He is married to a Jewish woman.
He's a very dark black man, I doubt he's mixed very much at all. Maybe he took his name from an Italian-American slave owner.
the name couldn't possibly be jewish right ?

Faison doesn't sound Jewish at all. I'd guess your friend's name is from Anglo-Norman, Gaelic or French extraction. Could be a corruption of another Saxon surname as another poster mentioned or even Danish. What did your friend tell you his ethnic background was? Ashkenazi Jews usually have very gaudy German last names dealing with mountains made from precious metals or flowers. Faison doesn't sound Sephardic either, if he was part Sephardic you wouldn't have to ask if he was Jewish you'd know it by looking at him.
he said specifically russian and jewish---then open just white... i presume he is just a mut with all these different things mixed together ?
