I'm an Essex man - all hail the East Saxons!

And we're not all Barking down here, either!

My family, on my English side are all Londoners from around the same area from what we've found of our family tree so far.

    STOKE-ON-TRENT

I am from Stoke -ON -Trent and proud of my home city.

Stoke on Trent is in North Staffordshire and is actually classed as the North West although some people class it as North West Midlands.

My city was the biggest producer of pottery in the world and the epicentre of the industrial revolution.

Our two main football clubs are Stoke City and Port Vale

Stoke City fans have a reputation for being the worst hooligans in the country, along with Millwall and Cardiff.

We have a population of around 250,000

We are a poor, working class city and we came top of the list, of worse places to live in England,

    Our wages are the lowest ( average salary 9 - 11 k p/a )

There is massive BNP support amongst the locals and the BNP was robbed the majoral allections due to vote rigging.

Osawld Molsley's center of support was Stoke

We have our own individual accent that is as unique and as hard to understant as the scouser, or gerodies.

The man who invented the spitfire was from Stoke.

Oatcakes and piklets are a local delicacy.

Stokies in general are poor and working class and the most common and down to earth people you can possibly meet,

IM PROUD TO BE A POTTER

    Good on you, Mate.
I'll second Red Jack - that's exactly the sort of post I was after in this thread.

    BUT!!!!!

    North West?

It all but kills me when I hear Cheshire folk claiming this glorious title, but the Black Country???

Where'd you get that odd idea from? You lads are undoubtedly Midlanders, and from your description the cream of the crop [almost approaching Mancunian levels of bazzingness]. You're Mercians!

I understand where you are coming from but its more complicated than it first seems.

Here in Stoke we get central news AND granada television.

Staffordshire is a very big county and South Staffordshire, which includes cannock, lichfield and tamworth is definatley classes as the west midland. The people sound like brummies. BUT Stoke on Trent is at the opposite end of the county in NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE and the accents are worlds apart.

We get the north west edition of auto trader and we can not get the west midlandS edition.

All the nation newspapers, including the sun, etc are the North West edition.

On Wikipedia Stoke and Crewe are down as Northern cities

Politically Stoke on Trent is more associated with the West Midlands. But culturaly it is alot more connected with the North West.

If Stoke was a part of the West midlands I would be proud. I dont care where Stoke is, as long as its Stoke.
It is, closer to Manchester than to Birmingham

Stoke is farther north than both Derby and Nottingam.

There is defiantley an argument for Stoke being a part of the west midlands and there is also a good argument for it being in the North West. There is however no argument for it being in the black country.

IF you look at a map of England and draw a line straight across the middle Stoke is above the line

    WE ARE DEFINATLY MERCIANS THOUGH

And I've had Geordies call ME a Southerner! I know it's a glorious thing to be from the North, but we have to draw the line somewhere, you know!

Funnily enough, however, in old works on dialect, Manchester and all the Mersey Basin [i.e. as far north as the hills which separate my lot from Blackburn and Burnley] are classed as belonging to the West Midland group. We are [dangerously!] exposed to Southern influences here, on account of the Cheshire Plain between the Welsh Mountains and the Peak, and much of your Stokie talk is not so alien to me. We don't pronounce house as 'hice' like you seem to do, but most of the lazy shortenings of words in your examples are present here too.

    Re: Where are you from?

I would not be any more proud of being a Northerner than a midlander.

Stoke on Trent is Stoke on Trent and I really dont care what we are classed as. As long as its stoke, thats goods enough for me.

We pronounce house as ICE not HICE

the H at the begining of words is almost always dropped.
