by the logic of height, you would easily look at the netherlands, the tallest country in the world. but using height as the only marker is wrong.
Couldn't agree more. Going by height makes about as much sense as saying that Yao Ming is descended from Vikings. But then again, he is 7 ft. tall...

The whole Scandinavians are always tall is a stereotype. My family is from Norway and we're not giants or close to. Average man in my family stands 5'7"-5'10". Plus, you have to take in mind that people these days tend to grow taller due to the hormones processed into the foods we eat. IMO, the Vikings varied in height just like most people do across modern day Scandinavia. I don't feel any less Scandinavian for being 5'7"-8".

The Vikings were not giants. In fact, they averaged about 5'6" or 5'7" based on their bones.

Also, we know that many of the Vikings who raided the British Isles carried the haplogorup R1a. The descendants of Scottish aristocracy now carry this lineage due to their Viking roots, for example.

We also know that some Vikings carried more eastern or lapponoid lineages, as has been proven by recent genetic tests done on their bones and teeth. This is because Vikings were not racially a pure group, they took anyone who was a great warrior, and it didn't matter whether they were short or fat, or even a Lapp.

Many Vikings were in fact Slavs from the southern Baltic shore. One of the greatest Viking centers, if not the greatest, was the Slavic/Norse town of Wolin (now in Poland).

Later when Poles subdued Jomsborg, the Polish ruler was nominated the Jarl of this famous Viking base, and there were more Slavs there than Scandinavians. Then, when King Olaf Trygvasson came back to Norway to regain his crown, he took with him a lot of Slavic wariors from Pomerania and Poland.

P.S. During Boleslaw Chrobry's rule in Poland, he supplied his nephew reinforcements for his conquest in England, his nephew was none other then Canute the Great.

P.P.S. Canute himself was half Polish

Re: Are there Viking genes left? If so, where?

I've also read where the average height was about 5'7'' for Vikings. Just as today's average height is probably 5'9'' or 5'10'' for males of northern European descent. Yet, men 6' to 6'4'' are everywhere. In the 8th-11th centuries they were around, just a little less common than today. I can imagine the vikings were more lean and muscular than today's average couch potato of the same height.

I'm just back from Orkney and there are Viking genes extant there.
Edinburgh University has done DNA testing on a sample of the population to back it up and they are now offering a test to the public to ascertain Pictish genes.

Re: Are there Viking genes left, if so, where?

Viking blood exist for sure in many white people around the world today.

As an Englishman it is very likley that I have Viking blood

I can feel there spirit and there blood in my veins all the time.

When I am out clubbing or in the pub and it is time to fight, I am confident that because of my Viking blood I will be ok.

I have a very very very quick temper and it isnt very often I go, but when I do I take people out with me every time, I put this hidden strenght and power and temper down to my Viking ancestors, for they too were wild and very hot headed just like every male in my family.
