    Genealogy Resources

Not everything on this site is accurate, since a lot of it is user-submitted information, but it can be a good start. Don't try to search yourself, your parents, or your grandparents — living people usually aren't listed for privacy reasons. But it can be surprising what you can find even for your great grandparents. It can make a good start.

Here's another site that's pretty similar, but it's all integrated instead of having different versions for different countries.

    http://www.google.com/
This may seem strange to some, but I've found it to be pretty helpful for some more distant ancestors. For example, I'm descended from the Sacketts in England that Louis L'amour made famous here in America. I don't know a lot about them because they're considered a somewhat minor line in our family. But for my distant cousins who still keep the name, they're not minor at all. By googling the name, I found a lot of good information from the living Sacketts' site about how our common ancestors came to America all those centuries ago and some more of their history back in England.

Google is also helpful for finding the stories about your ancestors. That means so much more to me than a name on a pedigree chart. I want to know what their lives were like. You'll find that you have a lot of unknown cousins whose branches of the family have kept some of those stories alive.

I think this is a paid site, which seems silly to me, since there's so much free information available. But if you feel more comfortable paying money to get to know your family, then go for it. It also highlights celebrity pedigrees — artists, athletes, historical figures, governmental leaders, royalty, and so forth.

This is a kind of collection of links to other resources, something like this post is trying to be. It has links to genealogical libraries, which usually own family histories and histories of regions and so forth. It's a pretty good collection of links.

If anyone else knows of good genealogical resources, feel free to post them here!

Enjoy getting to know your ancestors!

Wow for a long time now I've been trying to find some of my ancestors birth places, parents names, relatives, etc. I was mainly using ancestry.com and it wasn't very reliable, especially for non-American records, but that last link is great, but unfortunately it just proved I have Prussian (or where ever the hell "Schrotz" is) ancestry :p

You know, I have to say that the amount of online records for Germany are terrible. It's almost like things haven't gotten better since the Internet was created. The vast majority of my research had to be done through Professionals actually IN Germany (and the surrounding areas) in the old school way of whipping out the books and digging through them.

Is Genealogy THAT rarely done in Germany, or is it just me?

So I've found that my maternal grandmother's maiden name (Wolfrum) is highly concentrated in the area of Germany (northeastern Bavaria) that my mom is from. Didn't know that, very neat.

I also confirmed that my last name was (is) common in Ireland, but I already knew that.
Plus I've got people telling me in that classification thread that I look Irish.

WOW. Thanks so much Zyklops for this genealogy resource...within about 10 minutes I've already found out so many things about my own genealogy.

I already knew some basic things about my family and the familes tied to it but now I have stuff going all the way back to the early 1600's in Switzerland.

    Really, thanks.
