    National Personifications/Symbols

This thread is dedicated to posting the symbols of your nation, or of any other Germanic nations that you know of.

    For example,
Germania is the national personification of Germany.

    (painting by Philipp Veit)

    The Niederwalddenkmal

    Arminius/Hermann der Cherusker

or animal/plant symbols, such as the eagle:

    & the oak leaf

    Some information on national personifications:

A national personification is an anthropomorphization of a nation; it can appear in both editorial cartoons and propaganda. Some early personifications in the Western world tended to be national manifestations of the majestic wisdom and war goddess Minerva/Athena, and often took the Latin name of the ancient Roman province. Examples of this type include Britannia, Germania and Helvetia.

    German wording

Wir wollen sein ein einzig Volk von Brüdern,
in keiner Not uns trennen und Gefahr.
Wir wollen frei sein, wie die Väter waren,
eher den Tod, als in der Knechtschaft leben.
Wir wollen trauen auf den höchsten Gott
und uns nicht fürchten vor der Macht der Menschen.

    Approximate English translation

We shall be a single People of brothers,
we shall not part in danger and distress.
We shall be free, just as our fathers were,
and rather die, than live in slavery.
We shall trust in God almighty
and shall not fear the might of men.

Ola Nordmann is a name for to the average Norwegian, a representative for the whole population in general.

The media often uses "Ola Nordmann" to describe trends in the population.

For example: A headline in a newspaper that reads Norwegians consume less milk could be just as well read Ola Nordmann drinks less milk.

Caricatures of Ola Nordmann as a national personification of Norway usually depict him as a blond-haired man dressed in bunad-like traditional folk clothing and wearing a woollen red top cap - the traditional headwear of a Norwegian gnome or nisse. This character is meant to represent the Norwegian people as a whole.

Lady Columbia use to be a popular symbol of the US from the 1780s to around WWII. Her image frequently appeared on US coinage.

The Statue of Liberty is also a popular symbol of the US. I personally dislike the statue because it has become a pagan goddess of immigration & multiculturalism.
