Well the depigmentation is thought always from the Pontic steppes. But the race of the Alawites and nearby Lebanese is a distinctive type.

Coon reckoned the Druse, the Christian and Moslem Lebanese and Alawites as close enough together and called them the mountain groups. They are fully brachycephalic and he compared them to alpinised Anatolians and Albanians in TROE. He describes the Lebanese and implicitly all other mountain groups as Mediterranean X Alpine. Bertil Lundman characterised the Syrians as a mixed Armenid X high vaulted Eastern Mediterranean rather than the low vaulted Arabid race and states the Lebanese have a chamaecephalic Cro Magnon element.

Once in an Anthro. course and guy came in with a machine which reflected light off the skin and thus measured pigmentation or depigmentation. Each member of the course, of course, wanted to participate. The depigmentation winner was a Jewish girl with an Arab first name but her last name was "Pontic". Her skin was alabaster or china white rather than vascular pink.

Maybe she was descended from Pontic Greeks?
