    Question Classify Marat Safin

He's an ethnic Tatar. His phenotype looks fully Europid to me, but both his parents have obvious Mongoloid features. His phenotype isn't that uncommon among Kazan Tatars, actually.

Contrary to the widespread misconception, Tatars are not the Mongoloid descendants of the Mongols who invaded Russia. They are the descendants of Finns who adopted Turkic speech, and absorbed a large amount of Turkic blood, though they are still predominantly Europid.

he could pass for anything from an irish to a german to a turk, which kind of makes this whole classification business not too worthwhile for some of the people on this forum.

Most people can 'pass' for a lot of ethnicities. I am interested in his sub-racial classification.

OK, perhaps I should have been more specific... What traits distinguish the Kurganid type?

indeed i have been looking for it. kurganids are protoeuropid with various mongoloid deviations, descriptively.

Is this a type described by physical anthropologists? If so, could you recommend some reading material?

I don't see much Mongoloid in him - his cheekbones are high, and his eyes somewhat oblique, but he could easily pass for a Northern Frenchman or some other heavily UP-influenced European.
