Which Germanic People Has Had the Best Filmmakers Overall?

I'm looking for a whole solid group of artists coming from one people, rather than one superb artist among a group of mediocre artists overall.

You may disagree with the groups I have chosen. I feel that geopolitically these divisions of the Germanic people are the most reliable, particularly in a discussion on the arts. If you don't like these divisions, I am sorry — feel free to PM me any complaint you wish (that is, let's not sidetrack this discussion).

But with filmmakers especially, remember that we're talking about Germanic people.

And please, feel very free to cite — and if feasible, post — examples to support your choice.

(This thread is part of a bundle of threads intended to compare the state of the arts among the Germanic peoples. You can see the knot tying the bundle together in this thread:

Hey, this is a good thread, why isn't anyone posting? =(

I also think Koreans make awesome movies. Those of you who've seen the Vengeance trilogy know what I'm talking about.

I don't know. The most filmmakers, perhaps, or the best at distribution and marketing of their films. But are they really the best filmmakers of those listed here?

Re: Which Germanic People Has Had the Best Filmmakers Overall?

My choice was "English". The quality of directors and actors are rarelly found, they make both commercial and non-commercial movies, and both are very good in general (maybe all the myths about English people add a special taste...). It's logical when you have a terrific actors faculty and being a land with an immense culture and a very rich history.
About Germans... sorry to say it, but I don't like Werner Herzog, and the other 4 movies I saw were very commercial action movies (I don't remember the titles), funny, but not to call it "good cinema". I don't know Austrian filmmmakers. About the Scandinavians, I only saw two Swedish movies: one was about a teen lesbian who "converted" another friend (I didn't like it), and the other is to me one of the best movies I've ever seen. It was a speechless movie called "The Witch" ("Häxen" in Swedish, right?), it was in fact a documental on how terrible was the war against witchcraft in medieval times, really imparcial, I recommend it for sure.
I wonder why Italians were not included? I would have voted them without thinking it twice.

Re: Which Germanic People Has Had the Best Filmmakers Overall?

America's movie industry gained momentum after WWI, and eventually, in the 30's, Hollywood outclassed the continental Germanic cinema.

All blockbusters, tearjerkers and high school nonsense aside, competent American movie directors gave us enough classic, experimental and culty art to compensate for "Spiderman" and the like.

For over more than 50 years now.

I know of an american who once said to me: "All great things come straight out of America and all the worst things too."

And he's right, that's the beauty of his wisdom. Since the great outlasts the ugly, always, I voted for Germanic America.
