What can be told from looking at hands?

To the experts of racial classification:

I came to think of how different the hands of diffrent races and sub-races are. But how much can really be told about a human being's genetical ancestry just by looking at his or her hands?

Good question. On first instinct, I would say that Nordids would have gracile hands, with long and slender fingers, whilst those belonging to the Cromagnid races would have slightly rougher and coarsers hands. It's an interesting subject, bearing in mind that I am no expert in the field.

Besides hands, does anybody know if someone's teeth can tell anything about a racial type? If anybody knows, I'd love to hear their input.

I have only noticed big differences when one compares to East Asians. They always have very characteristic sets of teeth, mostly horrible. (Sorry, Japanese friends.)

Well, regarding teeth... I've read that mongoloid races have smaller teeth compared to europoids.

People always remark how tiny my hands are. I don't think that anything about my body (aside from my face/skull of course) is very consistent with the Noric classification. I feel like an alien.

I've always wondered about the teeth thing too... I have teeth almost exactly like my father's. They're kinda short and square and my two front teeth have little ridges at the bottom, almost like they never grew in completely - my mother's teeth, on the other hand, are long and smooth across the bottom.

Re: What can be told from looking at hands?

By the way, what exactly are Asian "shovel" teeth? I remember looking up Melungeons on the Internet one time (after hearing about them on a TV show) and the website kept referring to "shovel" teeth... I didn't really understand what they were based upon the descriptions given by the websites. There was also something about an "Anatolian bump" which I thought was weird - I know a lot of white people who have them.

I think this might be interesting in this respect:
    http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=37644

Like always there are different variations and basically its about size (dimension) and form (proportion).
Long narrow hands are typical for Leptosomics, which might in turn be more often schizothymic. In fact thats the main correlation working in the different European racial types, a shift of the average, standard phenotype. There is variation in all types, but there are basic shifts with different average and extremes.

Like mine? Just ignore that one really smooth tooth by my two front teeth. I chipped it, and so it's now half fake. Here's my hand too, since this is a hand thread. My hand is all shiny because I just put on hand lotion.

Going after the pictures of your hand your constitutional type should be Leptosomic to Leptosomic-Athletic, but not stronger build than Athletic - at least speaking about the predisposition.

It could be interesting to compare the hand index with the body mass index at age ~21-30 in a study though the outcome is predictable with a clear correlation on average, though being less clear in females probably.

Re: What can be told from looking at hands?

My father and I ...from his family line.... have hands that are short and stubby. We do not have knuckles that inhibit rings from going over. In fact, My thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger all wear the same size ring. They would be similar to a child's hands...only on an adult.

Look at the following children's hands: These are just googled hands, but it is how our hands are. fingers relatively same width, extra "cushioning" (not bony), cute little slight dimples on the back of the first knuckles.

    Aren't they adorable?
