    Eon: Spice

The song contains this sample from the film Dune:
"He who controls the spice, controls the universe!"

    "LUCIANO PAVAROTTI PRIMO TENORE"

    Arias from :

    William Tell (Rossini)
    I puritani (Bellini)
    Don Pasquale (Donizetti)
    Mefistofele (Boito)
    Il Trovatore (Verdi)
    La Gioconda (Ponchielli)
    La Boheme (Puccini)
    L'Arlesiana (Cilea)
    Maristella (Pietri)

This is a very early Pavarotti LP, his second for London. So early, in fact, that he appears on the cover without either beard or mustache. His voice, though fully developed and trained, has the freshness of youth.

In and of itself, this recording is a 40-minute master class in vocal technique. I had always admired the beauty of Pavarotti's voice, but I had not previously paid close attention to the masterful way that he uses it. This performance illustrates uniquely the difference between a singer who uses vibrato as needed for color and expression and one who uses it interminably because he cannot do otherwise.

Pavarotti can and , as needed, does sing senza vibrato in a pure "white" tone. He uses vibrato coloristically, allowing it to develop fully only on prolonged notes at the end of phrases and lines. In one of the arias, there are several trills; Pavarotti sings them without vibrato which, if used, would blur the clarity of the trills . I have heard these trills sung by some singers whose vibrato was so strong that the trill is indistinguishable from the vibrato !

Pavarotti's dynamic control is superb, an example for other tenors. I soon realized that, artless as his exuberant singing may sound, it is, in fact, all carefully thought out to give the desired effect. Every note he sings is sung the way it is intentionally. Yet, nothing sounds "studied" or pedantic. This is TRUE art.

Any aspiring tenor ought, if he can obtain it, to study this recording intently.
It is, as I said, an education in vocal technique in itself. The recording was made in 1971, and I hope that it has been re-released on CD.
