Dutch Company to Make Diesel from Plastics Waste

    Source & thank you AnarchoEthnoEko@yahoogroups.com

AMSTERDAM - A Dutch environmental technology company plans to build 15plants that will produce diesel fuel from plastics waste in 14 European Union countries, the firm said on Tuesday. Envosmart chairman John Bouterse told Reuters the plants will be built in the next five years with a total investment of 200 million euros ($234 million) and will be based on an environmentally-friendly technology. "We will start building the first plant in Germany after the summer ... and then build plants in Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands next year," he said.

The German plant will produce 38 million litres of diesel per year by processing 42,000 tonnes of plastics waste. The other countries where Envosmart will build smaller factories are Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Norway, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Italy, and theCzech Republic. The Dutch firm will sign a licensing agreement on Wednesday with Australian company Ozmotech, which has developed the technology to transform plastics waste into diesel.

Envosmart said the production process captures most of the polluting gases and liquids, making the diesel environmentally clean. Envosmart's fuel can be used in any standard diesel engines of trucks, buses, trains, boats, heavy equipment and generators, the company said.

SPLENDID ! I wish them the greatest success. I hope that this will be a stinging slap in the face to the Middle Eastern oil interests.

A wonderful initiative, both environmentally and regarding independence from OPEC countries.

Yes, but the point is that the plastic waste is already there/unavoidable to create, so it's better to put it to good use. Not extracting fuel from it would make us more dependent on other sources of fuel.

Agreed. Although its apparantly a nice way to clean up some of the mess plastics cast upon us, I don't see it playing a major difference in our dependence on raw oil. Nonetheless, I can just about imagine someone digging a trash field for plastics, and when mockingly asked if he's digging for oil, replying "allmost!"

Also, there are more conventional ways to put plastics (although not all of them) to good use, namely trough recycling. These may not be so environmentally friendly, however.

The difference is that plastic resources can be used twice, through extraction of diesel oil, (or as you state later, recycling, which is already happening, but not on a large scale enough), thus limiting for a certain percentage the amount of new raw oil we need to acquire. Even if that percentage isn't high, it still makes a difference. All small bits count.
