    Question Stereotypes of Australians?

I'm wondering what non-Australians generally think of Australians (if anything at all!).... so what's your opinion? Be honest now! Of course, if we're too far away and/or not heard of often enough to warrant thinking about, please state that too!

    Thanks in advance!

Indeed, as they say you should never worry about what other people think of you because if you knew how seldom they do you would probably be insulted!

That said there are a few different Aussy stereotypes which spring to mind; one is the layed back "Croccadile Dundee" type with the corks hanging out of his hat the other is the big tough larger lout prone to fits violence "Russell Crowe type" last but not least is the Hippy Backpacker type which is pretty self-explanatory and can be found in bus and rain stations all over europe all summer long, in fact incressingly all year around. But this last type generally poses little threat to the local fauna .

It's said that you are all descendants of convicted and racist surfers.

    Re: Stereotypes of Australians?

When I was young, back in the 70's, many Americans had the view that Australia was the last paradise on earth. It had a wonderful climate & friendly people, and was practically all white. Even though many White Americans consider themselves to be racially progressive they still prefer to live in all White areas & Australia was the worlds largest all White neighborhood. They only thing that kept millions of White Americans from migrating down under was the distance.

I visited Perth twice in the early 80's while in the U.S. Navy & generally liked it. The climate was wonderful & the people generally friendly although some did'nt seem to like having the fleet in port. I cound'nt help but notice the ethnic makeup of Perth. The people were overwhelmingly White & Anglo-Celtic. Lots of blonds & quite a few redheads. It was what America could have been if we had resettled our negroes in Africa or Central America after the Civil War & adapted restrictive immigration laws, limiting immigration to Northwestern Europeans. It saddens me to learn of what has happen to Australia in the last 20-25 years. It's paradise lost.

    Re: Stereotypes of Australians?

In my area these are the common stereotypes I have heard:
    Australians are all strong.
Australains have the can-do attitude that Americans used to have.
Australians are all rural (like the Man from Snowy River).
Australians are all cowboys, but they don't call them that.
Australian men are real men — always preferable to American men (I hate this one).
    Australians drink a lot.
Australians are better looking than average.
Australians are all a little odd at times.

There is a common subgenre of Christian romance novels whose heros are all Australian, with American heroines. A lot of the girls I knew as a kid read this kind of novel avidly, and sort of seemed to think that Australia was a kind of breeding grounds for gorgeous, strong, romance-novel men who had no women at home and needed to come to get them in America and take them away to Australia to live happily ever after.

Oh Goddess give me strength!! ROFLMAO!!!!

Don't worry Leofric, Aussie men aren't all they're cracked up to be then IMO! I married an Irishman - for a good reason! LOL (Nah, most Aussie blokes are decent, honest, hard-working guys really - not romance novel material though! God no!)

And something like 85% of the population live in coastal cities.

Australian women are better looking than average though. (In my dreams!)

I know the type you mean, and have an aversion to them. Fortunately, apart from in other countries, the best place to find them is probably the airport Interestingly, a lot of the European tourists who come out here give a similar impression as that type.

mmm.......this is a common one, and one which often puzzles me, since Australia was established by free settlers who soon vastly outnumbered the earlier convict arrivals. Then again, some Australians seem to like the idea of being seen as a convict nation, which probably explains why the story continues to do the rounds.

    Stereotypes:
Not many, we are too distant from each other.. i spare you the common places about kangaroos and similia
Probably most Italians think that Astralians have strong rural culture and attitude.

In real life my impression is that Australians are simply British people that moved on a far, distant island and started a new life
They are generally friendly and they treat everybody as if they know them since long time, which is pretty cool...

"E tutti si scandalizzano quando sentono dire: quel tale tipo di mammifero o di uccello ormai è sparito dalla faccia della terra, non lo vedremo più; è una grave perdita. Certo, si tratta di gravissime perdite.
Ma non sarebbe forse più grave se sparisse una comunità umana?? --Bruno Salvadori

Seven pictures of northern European males and seven pictures of northern African males were presented randomly via a computer screen to 82 Italian female undergraduates of the University of Padua, Italy.
Each picture depicted a full frontal face with a neutral facial expression. Participants were asked to classify each picture as either northern Italian or southern Italian.
On average, the seven pictures depicting northern Europeans were classified as northern Italians 81% of the time. The seven pictures depicting northern Africans were classified as southern Italians 83%
    of the time.
