Y-DNA/ mtDNA Does not affect the phenotype of one.. Autosomal, and another type of DNA does.. Only reason Meds are the way they are now is influence from our ditant cousins of the Middle East and North Africa..

Re: Med influence in northern Europe: I or R1b?

R1b chromosome is the most common Y-chromosome halogroup in Europe, Almost all the men in Western Europe (like 80-90% of English, Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Welsh men are part of the r1b halogroup). And it's the most common in the rest of W. Europe and Scandinavia.

R1a1 is the other halogroup common in Europe, but is most common in Eastern Europe, Poland, Ukraine, Russia. Tho it's also present in W. Europe like in the B. Islands and in some other places of W. Europe, mostly in Nothern countries.

Tho, according to halogroups what we have is more a west-east difference than a north-south difference.

Anyway we should remember that borth r1a1 and r1b are both sub types of the R1 type.

The discussion though, was about I1a, not I in general.

If we look at those who carry I in parts of Europe other than Scandinavia, they hardly come out looking as gracile Meds. They're most definitely robust, and very tall Cro-Magnon types. Just look at Polish Carpathian mountainers, Croats, or Ukranians.
So we've got all theories there... everybody would finally come from Meds ?

I'm haplogroup I, while phenotypically Atlandid. Atlantids are typically R1b, so I'm a bit confused... What did Gravettians look like? There's also a theory that holds Gravettians as the ancestors of Nordics (the so-called "Viking" haplogroups I1a & I1b).

IMO haplogroups cannot be accurately related to specific phenotypes, simply because it's the marker of all your fathers, whose phenotype can have been considerably altered by the women, while still remaining identifiable by the same HG through the generations.

The selective mutations of which show up in the autosomal DNA, rather than haploid DNA.
