    Post The Nordic Ideal in the Renaissance

    Okay, the "Gentlemen" thread was closed, but perhaps Oracle's sentence of the "epitome of physical beauty" that was carried over into Modern times deserves some answers.

    The racial type depicted in these pictures is the Nordid - which is still to be found today in northern Europe, and in purity in Scandinavia.

    The next one is interesting, because only from the drawing where there are no colours the anti-Nordists would say that it's unrealistic "Nordicism" to ascertain in facial features without colours the Nordid type pure or partly - just as of course it is always done with regard to ancient statues (though the fair colours and Nordid features of people who are imaged in the statues are mentioned in the literature!).

    The racial type depicted in these pictures is the Nordid
    No it isn't. Blond hair is not an exclusively Nordic trait, and treating it as such is the signature of Nordicism. As a matter of fact, Coon makes emphatically clear that blondism throughout Italy is of Alpine/Dinaric introduction.

    From his chapter on Italy:

    Blondism is everywhere correlated with a relatively high cephalic index.

    The association of relatively great blondism with brachycephaly merely indicates that both Alpines and Dinarics are characteristically mixed or intermediate in pigmentation.

    The high ratio of reddish shades in the hair and of mixed eyes reflects the strong Alpine strain in this population, as does the large minority of non-brunet skin colors and the presence of freckling.

    The "small cowper Madonna," for instance, is clearly brachycephalic, which automatically rules her out from being Nordic. And the last woman posted by Thorburnulf has a distinctly Italian profile complete with Roman nose, which is thought to be of Mediterranean derivation and would look rather unusual in, say, Scandinavia. In addition, a good number of those people are in fact brunette, both women and men, and platinum blondes are rare. Only the children seem to be invariably blond, but they're not good examples because it's well known that hair darkens with age.

    All in all, Renaissance Italian art reflects an Alpine-Mediterranean ideal, with men often dark and women usually medium brown- to golden-haired. This should come as no surprise since it happens to mirror the racial make-up of northern Italy, the seat of Renaissance activity.

    Well, the Renaissance Ideal is still greatly recognizeable as a Nordoid type or an Alpine-Dinaric blend typical for most of NE Italy, where in its most remote and eastern corners this fluidity becomes complicated with small numbers of East Baltics or blond brachycephalized Danubians.
    The noses in these men are high-bridged, but to thin and not fleshy to comfort a Dinaric inspiration, sometimes it's to flat, but the downward directing tip is fully in accordance with a Dinaric situation.
    These people merely represent the wide scala of possible racial combinations in North Italy.
