    Re: Egerland

What exactly was the nature of Egerland? Was it a self-contained administrative area? An old territory, with a tradition of self rule prior to Habsburg rule? Was all the Sudetenland made up of such units?

    Re: Ostsiedlung

A very useful old map. It just goes to show what has been lost from these old lands of settlement. We know something about what happened after WWII -- but is there now any significant presence of German people in Poland at the present time?

    Re: Ostsiedlung

Most of the ethnic Germans, living in Poland, are to be found in Upper-Silesia, more precisly in and near Oppeln. Although there are outside upper Silesia aswell small German communities, the one of Oppeln is the most significant.

Plus there are numerous Polonized Germans....

    Re: Ostsiedlung

thanks for your answer. of course I knew that they had mostly been expelled/ choosen to leave after the war. But it is interesting to hear that some do actually remain. I wonder if they are visited and supported by Germans from the West.

Many years ago, I happened to be in Augsburg, S Germany. It was a Sunday . There was through the town a huge demonstration of German Expellees; I am not too sure whether they were from Bohemia or Silesia. Perhaps both. Memorable, since they were all in folk costume and the day really was a strange mixture of grim and jolly! A big political movement of course.... and fairly militant for old rights .....

Probably they were from Bohemia. Most Sudeten Germans who were driven from their homes fled to Bavaria (I have family from the border region between the Sudetenland and Oberschlesien as well. All of them went to Bavaria).

Is there any particular reason why around Oppeln? Was this a strategic decision by the Communists, considering that these Germans were sufficiently far from a border to be left alone?

According to the information I have from German sources is because those Germans from Upper Silesia were in majority Roman-Catholic, and Poland considered them as Germanized Poles, which they aint, considering the many German surnames.

I guess I will soon make aa thread about this issue, after I collect all the info necesarry, I will post it on Skadi or on Nordfolk, maybe on both, it depends. Have a bit patient, comrade!
