    BAD VIBES FOR GHOSTS

Scientists believe they can explain why churches and seemingly haunted houses send a shiver down the spine.

They believe the chilly sensation is caused, not by any 'paranormal' activity, but by subtle vibrations just below our limits of hearing.

New research has shown the existence of the ultra-low frequency vibrations, known as infrasound.

Scientists say the vibrations can cause a variety of effects from anxiety to elation, affects candles and creates the cold feeling we think of as shivers down the spine.

Infrasound is an extreme bass sound - a note so low that it can be felt but not heard.

It is often produced in churches by their pipe organs but can also be caused naturally by wind, traffic or electrical equipment.

The research, outlined at the British Association Festival of Science in Salford, Manchester, involved testing concertgoers by playing the ultralow sound under music and then asking them how they felt.

Many complained of anxiety or shivers down the spine.

Dr Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire told the Daily Mail: "These results suggest that low frequency sound can cause people to have unusual experiences, even though they cannot consciously detect infrasound".

I wonder if the people were told that the noise was being played yet it actually wasn't, to see if the people were thinking that they felt cold etc.
