Post Neolithic Scandinavia (Carleton S. Coon, The Races of Europe)

CS Coon, The Races of Europe, Chapter IV. The Neolithic Invasions, (12) Neolithic Scandinavia, pp. 120-125, The Macmillan Company, New York, 1939.

PS. Attention moderator(s). I will post more (perhaps one more tomorrow) chapters that are missing online. In the future, I suggest a sticky or a thread called (missing) chapters from The Races of Europe.

Post Re: (12) Neolithic Scandinavia (CS Coon, The Races of Europe)

Excellent. This addresses two issues we have recently discussed: the origins of the Nordid type, and the differences between Borrebies and Alpinids.

    Borrebies - http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=41323

    Nordids - http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=40892

The Megalithic and Corded skulls in the proportions given by Coon support our theory that the classic Nordid type is ultimately Atlantid with Corded admixture. Reselection then took place. Considering what we know of the Neolithic and following periods, this is the only possibility, since I have yet to see or hear of any evidence placing the Danubians in Scandinavia, and the classic Nordid type does not resemble the smaller Danubian.

We may consider it a favourable modification of Coon's near miss Corded-Danubian theory, but many will reject it instinctively, even though the Atlantid is far, far more distinguished than the Danubian. What they will reject is any association with the Atlantids because they are usually much darker, and are being continually gnawed at by the Mediterranids.

Coon uses the term invasion to describe the arrival of the Corded type in Scandinavia, but if it was an invasion, it can only have been of the Megalithic culture. For the evidence does not suggest that the Corded arrival directly affected the Borreby and Falian hunter-gatherers, who appear to have eventually taken advantage of the situation, we may assume because the new proto-Nordid culture had more to offer than had the Megalithic.
