    Post Nobel Winners in Literature

Here's a list of Nobel Prizewinners in literature since 1901:[link].If you're like me then many of the names will be unfamiliar to you, even the recent winners.I was curious about how many Jews had won and what the trends were by nationality and race. This is what I found.

    There were 99 winners,and co-winners,from 1901 to 2002,including 9 women.

    Largest national totals

    France 13
    USA 10
    UK 9
    Germany 7
    Sweden 7
    Italy 6
    Spain 5
    Poland 4
    USSR/Russia 4
    Denmark 3
    Norway 3
    Ireland 3

    Racial totals

    White 75
    Jew 11
    Black 4
    Latin American 4
    Oriental 3
    Wog/Brown 2

The Jews were wrongly identified as members of their host populations rather than as a separate national group. So it took a bit of digging to uncover their real identities.Three of the US winners were Jews, for instance, and Jews also 'won' for Germany,France,USSR,UK,Sweden, Hungary, and South Africa.

Most of the early 20th-century winners were white.Names like Hemingway, Steinbeck,Kipling,Yeats, and Churchill predominate.Churchill(1953) was a surprise to me because he was a non-fiction writer. The philosopher Bertrand Russell won in 1950.The 5 British winners before Churchill were white;only 1 of 3 since.Every American winner(6) until the 1960's was white;none since.Countries such as Germany,Norway, Sweden and Denmark had more success in the early 20th-century than later. In fact, since 1980 more non-whites have won than whites:20 to 19. 8 of the 20 were Jews, including last year's winner Imre Kertez, a 'Holocaust survivor'.These bastards have driven us out of literature with feminism and minority studies.

One thing I noticed about all the winners was that they devoted their lives to writing and that's what the Nobel Prize was usually for.It was for their life's work.Sometimes individual works were mentioned, though: Knut Hamsun won for 'Growth of the Soil' in 1920.

As I said, most of the names were new to me,despite my vigilance. And I certainly won't be getting any more familiar with Toni Morrison or Gao Xingjian(do they pick them because they're alien?).But I did spot a few that seem worth reading, such as Patrick White of Australia(1973),the American William Faulkner(1949),and perhaps Ireland's Samuel Beckett(1969),whom I've never read.

3 winners for Ireland wasn't bad either.

    hey, interesting topic Vigilant
i would have though we gaels would have gotten more than 3 to be honest...i presume we got ours for Samuel BEckett (check out waiting for godot) Seamus Heaney and Yeats.
9 women is pretty hilarious but rather understandable since i can only ever think of one female poet i like and no female authors...I think I'm a female misogynist

Forget it, you can't join our exclusive club.
And all my youth passed by sad-hearted,
    the joy of Spring was never mine;
Autumn blows through me dread of parting,
and my heart dreams and longs to die.

Real misanthropes are not found in solitude, but in the world; since it is experience of life, and not philosophy, which produces real hatred of mankind.
